This is a great thread and even I, coming from Hamburg myself, always tend to find something new and interesting in this. Keep up the good work!

Are you currently still located in Hamburg? Or in Sidney as your profile states as well?

Looks like, that we have to go to Hamburg, if we want to see the future of architecture in Germany. In Berlin they still care more about its history.

First algae powered building goes up in Hamburg

A 15-unit apartment building has been constructed in the German city of Hamburg that has 129 algae filled louvered tanks hanging over the exterior of the south-east and south-west sides of the building—making it the first in the world to be powered exclusively by algae. Designed by Arup, SSC Strategic Science Consultants and Splitterwerk Architects, and named the Bio Intelligent Quotient (BIQ) House, the building demonstrates the ability to use algae as a way to heat and cool large buildings.

To make use of the algae, which the team retrieved from the nearby Elbe river, it was put into large thin rectangular clear cases. Inside, the algae live in a water solution and are provided nutrients and carbon dioxide by an automated system. Each tank was then affixed to the outside walls of the building onto scaffolding that allows for turning the tanks towards the sun—similar to technology used for solar collectors. As the algae grows—mostly in the summer—it provides more shade for the building, helping to keep it cool (and serves as a sound buffer as well). Excess heat that builds up in the water in the tanks is transferred to saline water tanks underneath the building for use later. When the amount of algae growth in the tanks reach a certain point, some is harvested and taken to a processing facility inside the building. There the biomass is converted to biogas which can be burned to provide heat in the winter. Thus, the building makes use of both solar thermal and geothermal energy allowing it to be heated and cooled without using any fossil fuels.

The design and construction of the BIQ has taken three years and has cost approximately €5 million, all funded by Internationale Bauausstellung (IBA) as part of the ongoing International Building Exhibition – 2013. The BIQ House is one of 16 projects undertaken by the group, with the goal of proving that cost effective ways of making bio-friendly buildings are available today. To highlight the building, the team has painted its exterior green and has added a giant cartoon-like bubble on one side with the word "Photosynthesis?" in it.

The building is to serve as a test case and will be studied by various architects and engineers from around the world to determine if the design is feasible and if so, to perhaps serve as a model when erecting buildings in other cities.

I am really upset...
Musical operator Stage Entertainmant tries to get green light for a cable car system over the Elbe river for ages know, and always gets rejected by offices and Hamburgs poulation. Yes! Because this plan sucks!

I was happy, because I thought this project was finally dead. Now I have to read the the suckers from Stage Entertainment managed somehow to bring it to a vote again.

please Stage Entertainment. GIVE IT UP!
Hamburg is not disneyland and no one here wants to see a cable car next to the Landungsbrücken, Michel and Elbe-philharmonichall!!!

Maybe some tourists would find this idea good. But Tourists are not everything for a city

Well... First association I get is with the alps, not disneyland nor any other amusement park.

I have a sort of default inclination to not oppose to anything because it would be "ugly", given it provides utility to someone. This one doesn't look that bad, then again I wouldn't have to look at it daily.

There is one under planning in Oslo too.

I think cable cars can be a great asset to the city. However I have to say that the towers seen on the render of the Hamburg cable car looks a tad too bulky and large for my taste, but I don't know if that's final designs though? It seems like a nice project otherwise.

It depends were and why you build them. The Rio cable car brings you up a mountain and the London cable car is outside the city center with a minor impact to the city, while in Hamburg it will change dramatically the city shape.
And next to London or Rio Hamburg has no high buildings expept the tiny church towers to balance and soften the impact. so the cable car pylons will look like monsters from "War of the worlds" walking through the city maincore. That might be funny for tourists, but for locals ... I am not so sure.

And: Private investors will carry all/most of the costs... Yes..We already know what that means from the elbe philharmonic hall...

Apart from the old Elbe Tunnel there isnt any other crossing over the river, though. Pedestrians dont like tunnels, so this car would provide a nice alternative.

Probably the current most important infrastructure project... "Hafenquerspange" in Hamurgs south. (New Autubahns, bridges, roads, trains, etc ...)

routes for the Autobahn. For the southern way (yellow) through the harbour a new bridge is planned.

Today a German-Danish company won the competition:
Ingenieurgemeinschaft sbp - WTM - D+W
schlaich bergermann und partner - sbp GmbH, Stuttgart
and
WTM Engineers GmbH, Hamburg
DISSING + WEITLING architecture, Kopenhagen, Denmark

The new Kattwyk-Bridge will look like this:

pictures: www.hamburg.de

500 meters away from that largest flap bridge in Europe is U/C. The new Rethebridge
