On SGCCI’s request, Indigo airlines team to visit Surat

Quote:
Surat, 18 May 2013

India’s profit making airline Indigo will carry out an exercise to check whether there is enough traffic to launch a flight connecting Surat to Mumbai. Indigo’s higher officials will visit Surat and hold a meeting with Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry(SGCCI) in first week of June, according to SGCCI president Paresh Patel who held a meeting with Indigo’s Director Rajatkumar and Vice President Ajay Bhatnagar in Delhi on Friday.

Surat which is the second largest city of Gujarat, is presently connected to airports of rest of India through services of Indian Airlines and Spice Jet. But SGCCI believes that this is not just enough, and city should have more air services.

In a meeting with Indigo airlines officers, a delegation of SGCCI suggested to start new flights between Surat and Mumbai, so that NRIs traveling to and from Europe and U.K may get domestic connectivity after and before the international flight. SGCCI suggested that Indigo’s Mumbai-Delhi flights may halt at Surat in the mornings and evenings. SGCCI delegation presented data of existing passenger traffic the other airlines enjoy at present at Surat airport.

Domestic and International airlines: Connect Surat (STV) with more flights

Petition by
Gaurang Mehta
United States

There are numerous NRIs in and around Surat, India that would love to have international fights connected to Surat or connecting flights from Mumbai or Ahmedabad to Surat. These flights would be very popular with thousands of South Gujarat residents now living abroad and with those folks travelling for business and pleasure.

Imagine landing in Mumbai or Ahmedabad in the middle of the night and then waiting several hours to catch a 4 hour train ride to get to Surat or catching a cab / car that drives you 4-5 hours to Surat and surrounding area. Instead, if there were international flights landing in Surat or connecting flights that connected Mumbai or Ahmedabad with Surat, it would reduce the amount of hassle by a large amount and make it so attractive to the large population of international travellers travelling to and from Surat and its surrounding area.

Currently, such a traveller adds about 8-10 hours to their overall journey. If there were direct flights or connecting flights, this would cut down to 3 or 4 hours. Additionally, it removes the hassle of getting out of the airport and going to the train station or catching a cab. Travelling with a family of four, quadruples the amount of hassles with all the change and baggage involved with the current situation.

I am creating this petition to catch the attention of the airline industry so they can add flights to Surat. Either international or domestic connections would be very welcome. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area where there are many such travellers and I am positive this can reach out to thousands more.

Passenger traffic at airport up by 25%

Quote:
SURAT: In what could be seen as music to the ears of airline companies planning to start operations from Surat, the outbound passenger traffic from the airport catered by two airlines - Indian and SpiceJet - on the Mumbai and Delhi routes has gone up to 20,000 per month.

The official statistics of the passengers travelling from Surat airport maintained by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) suggest a 25 per cent increase in the passenger traffic in April 2013 compared to the same month previous year.

Every month around 10,000 to 16,000 passengers travel to Mumbai, Delhi and other destinations from the city in Indian Airlines and SpiceJet aircraft. From March 2013, the number of passengers has increased to 18,000 to 20,000.

Sources said both the SpiceJet and Indian Airlines have been providing onward flight connectivity to the passengers bound to Delhi and Mumbai.

However, a passenger wanting to travel to Goa or Thiruvananthpuram are provided with connecting flights from Mumbai and those wanting to travel towards northern and south eastern states are provided connectivity from New Delhi.

Official sources said there are 95 per cent bookings with both the airline companies operating from Surat for May and mid-June due to the summer vacation.

Recently, a trade delegation from the diamond city met senior officials of Indigo airlines to apprise them about the potential of passenger traffic from Surat airport.

Kamlesh Yagnik, president elect, SGsaid, "The Indigo authorities are soon planning to launch their flight services from Surat. The increasing passenger traffic from the airport has put the diamond city on the top priority list of the leading airline companies."

EH Pathan, solid waste manager, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), said, "Two airlines and 20,000 passengers per month is a big thing. If the people here get access to more destinations through other airline companies then the passenger traffic would double up further.

AirAsia India team to visit city next month

Quote:
Surat: Budget carrier AirAsia India, which is planning an aggressive expansion in India, is looking at Surat as one of its preferred destinations.

At high-level team of the airline's officials will be visiting the city for three days starting June 2 to conduct a survey, said Paresh Patel, present of South Gujarat Chamber of commerce and Industries (SGCCI).

AirAsia is a joint venture between Asia's largest low-cost airline AirAsia Bhd of Malaysia, Tata Sons Ltd and Arun Bhatia of Telestra Tradeplace Pvt Ltd.

Surat has a huge 413 acre airport with facility to park about eight aircrafts. It could be enhanced to 50 by creating hangers and making it a cargo hub. Airport Authority of India (AAI) had earlier planned to develop the airport as cargo hub and parking space. However, these plans have remained only on paper. "

We foresee a good future of Surat airport and it could be developed into a major cargo and parking hub for national and international aircrafts with few modifications," said a senior official of AirAsia India on the condition of anonymity.

SGhad made representations to the airline to provide air connectivity to and from Surat. A private citizens group "We want working airport at Surat" have also been campaigning for more flights from Surat on the networking sites.

In their reply, officials of the airline have said that Surat is on their radar for future planning.

Campaign to attract international airlines to Surat begins
SURAT: Members of 'We want a working airport at Surat' (WWWAS) have started a petition signing campaign to sensitize domestic and international airlines about the potential of air travellers in south Gujarat if Surat airport was connected to national and global destinations.

The petition, which has been filed on change.org by the WWWAS members, states that there are numerous NRIs in and around Surat, who are eagerly awaiting better connectivity of the city with domestic and international cities. Such flights would be very popular with thousands of south Gujarat residents now living abroad, it says.

Gaurang Mehta, a Surti NRG businessman living in San Francisco in the United States and a member of WWWAS, said, "Imagine landing in Mumbai or Ahmedabad in the middle of the night and then waiting several hours to catch a train or taxi to get to Surat. If there were international flights landing in Surat or flights that connected Mumbai or Ahmedabad with Surat, they would have reduced the amount of hassle to a large extent to international travellers."

He added, "Currently, the travel adds about 10 hours to the overall journey. If there were direct flights or connecting flights, this would cut down the travel time by 4 hours."

Linesh Shah, a WWWAS member, said, "Hundreds of frequent travellers in and around Surat have signed the petition in the past two months. We are sending the petition to the leading domestic and international airlines about the potential of air traffic from Surat airport."

At present, only Spice Jet and Air India operate flights from Surat airport connecting the city to New Delhi and Mumbai.

EH Pathan, another WWWAS member, said, "It is our firm belief that the petition signing campaign would work wonders in attracting leading domestic and international airlines to Surat. We have been approaching travellers from across south Gujarat and those settled abroad."

Surat looks forward to better air connectivity
Surat: The move by the union civil aviation ministry to do away with airport and navigational charges for the airlines in tier II and tier III cities has opened up new vistas for Surat airport. The move is a bid to encourage air connectivity in such cities.

Frequent flyers and members of the We Want a Working Airport at Surat (WWWAS) believe that the move would attract airline companies to start operations from Surat airport and there would be more players willing to connect Surat with other places.

Civil aviation minister Ajit Singh had recently said, "We are planning to stop charging from airlines connecting small towns. Fees like airport charges, navigational charges and other such costs-which are nine per cent of the total cost of any airliner-will be waived off and Airports Authority of India (AAI) will bear it."

At present, Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGis in talks with IndiGo and AirAsia for connecting Surat with domestic and international destinations. Both the companies have expressed their willingness to start operations from Surat.

Kamlesh Yagnik, president of SGCCI told TOI, "It is certainly a positive decision by the civil aviation ministry to encourage air connectivity in the small towns. Surat is going to be benefited in a big way." He said that AirAsia and IndiGo have been looking to expand their operations to Surat. Now, the waiver would be an added advantage.

At present, SpiceJet and Air India have been providing air connectivity to Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore and some destinations from Surat.

Linesh Shah of WWWAS said, "We are expecting leading airline companies like Jet Airways, IndiGo, AirAsia etc. to expand their network to Surat after the waiver being offered by the civil aviation ministry."

coffe culture

How will these coffee culture gonna make business if only 2-3 flights are coming and assuming at least half of the passengers and workers gonna buy something? If it is private than even worst. I heard more shops -stole kinda stuff coming to airport.

just my opinion, I feel like than we are going to have some more flights.
if you look in terms of business; It gat to be between at least 3-5 flights. I think, we should have at least daily direct flight to kolkata, chennai, hyd, b'lore, amd, and might be goa and jaipur.
