Thailand to help Myanmar build power plants for SEA Games this year

Thailand has agreed to provide energy assistance for Myanmar in its preparations for the 27th SEA Games in Yangon. Two power plants will be constructed in Myanmar with support from Thailand.

According to Energy Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisarn, Myanmar has abundant natural resources such as coal and natural gas but lacks technological expertise and proficient human resources needed for the power plant construction. Myanmar has therefore called on Thailand to help build the two power plants for electricity generation during the 27 SEA Games in December this year, the minister said.

Myanmar traditional sports to be put under different category in SEA Games

Myanmar's traditional games will be put under different categories in the coming 27th SEA Games to be hosted in the country, official media reported Tuesday.
The traditional sports will be integrated into existing sports events but it would not mean deterioration to the host's pursuit of golds, said the New Light of Myanmar.
Myanmar's martial arts being similar to Indonesia's Pencak Silak will fall under the category while Myanmar's boxing will be played under Muay Thai.
The country could not afford to add traditional sports into the SEA Games category and it requires demonstrations of the sports willing to be included in SEA Games opening and closing ceremonies during two years in advance, the report said, quoting an official of Sports Ministry.

(Sports) 27th South East Asia Games enters 10-day countdown

YANGON, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- The 27th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games entered the 10-day countdown on Sunday.

The 30,000-seat Wunna Theikdi Stadium at Nay Pyi Taw, the capital city of Myanmar, that will witness the opening and closing ceremonies, is waiting for the seats to be filled, for all the tickets to be sold out, and for all the arrivals of athletes and delegations from ASEAN and guests from other countries.

"We are ready to host SEA Games since overall preparations are done. Asian and ASEAN federation delegates have come to check and approved our stadiums and venues. Besides, A total of 10,000 tickets allotted to the public purchase for watching opening ceremony have all been sold and only some tickets are left, reserved for foreigners," U Htay Aung SEA Games media officer told Xinhua.

It has been 44 years since Myanmar hosted their last, the fifth South East Asia Games in 1969, which saw the host Myanmar topping the total medal tally with 57 gold medals.

SEA Games squads from the regional countries keep arriving at designated locations while some squads for Chinlone have been in Myanmar for a few months in a joint training with the host team, whereas some of Myanmar squads are yet to come home from their extended trainings in China.

Experts from China helped provide technical support for the opening ceremony as Myanmar authorities want to show that Myanmar SEA Games is none the less than others, if not better.

The mascot of 27th SEA Games, the owl couple named U Shwe Yoe and Daw Moe, Myanmar's traditional good-luck charm, start to appear on billboards at junctions, flags that hang outside the stadiums and road lamp posts.

On the gigantic long stretched square boards standing on the road sides are depicted 33 mascots mimicking an athlete of each sport in action.

People are impatiently waiting to see what Myanmar-hosted SEA Games looks like after all the preparations. "The biggest tournament of the region came to my country after 44 years, so my expectation is very high," Htoo Aung, a company worker, said. "I wish Myanmar's standing in terms of medal tally is at least as good as other top countries in the region."

Three days later people will see Chinlone, one of the 33 sports, kicks off at Nay Pyi Taw's Wunna Theikdi Indoor Stadium.

The SEA Games hosts 33 sporting events awarding 460 gold, 460 silver, and 637 bronze medals from Dec. 11 to 22 in four different places, namely Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Mandalay and Nge Saung beach.

http://www.elevenmyanmar.com/sports/...-for-sea-games

NAYPYITAW-Myanmar will have more than 3,000 volunteers available to provide basic assistance for the upcoming 27th SEA Games, according to officials.

Ministry of Sports recently made a nation-wide drive to recruit volunteers from across the country to work as interpreters and volunteers to provide basic assistance in the Games and later selected 3,055 as volunteers among the applicants.

They received training for volunteering and the training completion ceremony was held on November 21 at Wonnatheikdi Stadium in Nay Pyi Taw, the official capital of Myanmar.

The volunteers will provide basic assistance during the Games.

SEA Games return to Myanmar after 44 years

http://www.elevenmyanmar.com/sports/...after-44-years

The opening ceremony of the pre-SEA Games, held in Nay Pyi Taw in August (Photo – EMG)

NAY PYI TAW—The Southeast Asian Games, formerly known as the Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games, were first held in 1959. This year’s 27th edition of the biennial sporting event will be the third time the Games have been held in Myanmar, and the first time in 44 years.

Before this year’s event, Myanmar had only hosted the 2nd SEAP Games in 1961 and the 6th SEAP Games in 1969 and had never hosted the sports event after the name was changed. After 1990, Myanmar lost its chance to host the Games several times due to the lack of large stadiums and gymnasiums. The upcoming SEA Games will be held in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Mandalay, and Ngwe Saung Beach from December 11 to 22. Thirty-three sports will be featured in the event, including Myanmar’s traditional ‘chinlone’ (cane-ball), which is a new sport at this year’s Games.

The first time

The 2nd Southeast Asian Peninsular Games were held in Yangon in 1961. All competitions were held in Yangon from December 11 to 16. According to historical records, the Games included 13 sports and approximately 800 athletes from seven countries participated in the event.

The opening and closing ceremonies were held at Bogyoke Aung San Stadium and Zaw Weik, known as the father of Myanmar sports, carried the Games torch. The sport event featured aquatics, athletics, badminton, boxing, basketball, cycling, football, sailing, shooting, table tennis, volleyball, and weightlifting. Myanmar led the medal tally with 35 gold medals, 26 silver and 43 bronze. The other participating countries were Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Cambodia, and Laos.

The second time

Myanmar hosted the 6th SEAP Games in 1969. The event was held at Bogyoke Aung San Stadium from December 6 to 13, with participation from six countries. The significant thing about this event was that Vietnam was divided into two due because of the civil war, and only South Vietnam participated in the Games. The sports were aquatics, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, cycling, football, gymnastic, judo, rugby union, Sepak Takraw, shooting, sailing, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, and weightlifting. Myanmar led the medal tally with 149: 57 gold, 46 silver, and 46 bronze. Myanmar sports team won gold medals in aquatics, athletics, boxing, cycling, football, volleyball, and wrestling.

The third time—after a 44-year wait

All 10 Southeast Asian countries will participate in the upcoming 27th SEA Games. As Myanmar will be hosting event, new stadiums and gymnasiums have been built along with the ‘Gold Camp,’ a sports village for the athletes, in Nay Pyi Taw. Most of the competitions will be held in Nay Pyi Taw, with seven other sporting events in Yangon, one event at Ngwe Saung Beach and women’s football matches in Mandalay.

This year’s event will feature Olympic category events as well as traditional games from the region. The Philippines strongly objected to the addition of traditional games and withdrew its men’s football team, even though the list of officially approved events had been drawn up.

Although Myanmar ranked first in the medal tally both times it hosted the Games in the past, the athletic prowess of Myanmar is now very different from other countries’ levels. Myanmar thus expects to finish no higher than third place in the medal tally, winning about 100 gold medals. Among the 33 sports, Myanmar has the potential to win gold in more than 20.

After 44 years, Myanmar is finally ready to successfully host the SEA Games and win some medals. The only question seems to be whether Myanmar’s sports teams will continue to enjoy their reputation as good hosts as they did in the past.
