Typical Miami telenovela drama.
He may have self-serving interests, but the question that boggles my mind is why did that Mayor not follow the law? If it had to go through a bidding process, then do it. Hoping someone wouldn't notice is no way to govern. It seems this landowner has a history against sports development as a burden to the community.

How this ends up, I have idea...

If the Mayor has broken the law in order to push forward this development, then he should be made accountable.

It depends on the interpretation of said law, however. Those economic development laws for speeding up things are used all the time in Miami, and the US really. But hey, if this stadium saga needed any more drama, here it is...

Wealthy Miami Heir Sues to Kill David Beckham Stadium Deal

Of course, Matheson also has a personal reason to be concerned: He owns land nearby.

"Twenty-five thousand people entering that neighborhood will wreak havoc with noise, traffic, and pedestrian congestion, because it’s not only a proposed soccer stadium, it’s a proposed concert stadium," Matheson told New Times via phone after the Miami Herald broke news of the suit.

The suit says Matheson himself is "ready, willing, and able to purchase the County Property at the same price and on the same terms the County has offered the County Property" to Beckham's group. Matheson owns property on North River Drive less than a quarter-mile from the stadium site. (He does not live on that property and instead spends most of his time aboard his 72-foot Argosy yacht.)

It's a classic Matheson move: He maintains an encyclopedic knowledge of local and state law and has exactly zero time for fools, hustlers, and county executives.

Only in Miami would "pedestrian congestion" be considered a bad thing.

Nimbyism isn't some local anomaly. Especially in a place like Spring Garden, any similar neighborhood in the country would push back on a big development next door.

Yeah, though he was specifically pointing at the "pedestrian congestion" part, when Miamians only walk in malls and on the beach and live a sizable part of their lives in cars otherwise...

David Beckham is close to formalising an MLS franchise in Miami and could revolutionise the league according to Atlanta United president Darren Eales.

Beckham is awaiting the green light to proceed with his new club in the American League and has already shown his intent by attending the Board of Governors meeting which is equivalent to the Premier League shareholders meeting.

Though the ruling is a win for Beckham’s four-year quest for a Miami stadium, it does not offer legal finality. Ruiz said the law involving no-bid land sales is tricky, and that Matheson’s lawsuit would likely be decided on appeal.

Matheson has 30 days to appeal. I don't expect a final MLS approval until January/February at the earliest. Two franchises will be added in December from all the other candidate cities. Miami is on its own separate path into MLS and it looks to be in good shape.

LEIWEKE UNSURE IF MIAMI GETS DONE

Tim Leiweke fears David Beckham’s MLS franchise wont come to fruition.

This after MLS commissioner Don Garber said in August the league could officially unveil Miami as an expansion team “perhaps by the end of the summer,” according to ESPN.

“I’m helping any way I can with David,” Leiweke told the Sun. “I hope it gets done, but it’s not done. I have my fears as to whether it’s going to get done because things like this that drag on this long that’s always tough on a process. But for David I hope he lands somewhere.”

Leiweke joined Beckham’s investment group in 2015 in an effort to push the deal through.

Two years later, all’s quiet on the south Florida expansion front.

“It would be unfortunate for the league to not honour the job he did and the decision he made,” Leiweke added. “His best work would still be ahead of us if we could figure out a way to get him involved with a franchise.

“But our company has a lot of different projects. I haven’t spent a lot of time on Miami lately so I’m not sure if that gets done. I hope it does for David’s sake.”

Good! He won't be appeal after all. He must accept it and not try to file lawsuit anymore. Those people who want to go to see soccer game and they want to be build a new soccer stadium. He cannot be file lawsuit against MLS. He must had respect that.

While the Beckham group controls the stadium site thanks to the county deal and an earlier purchase from private owners, it still must win city approval from Miami for street closings and the zoning needed to build the stadium. That process also could be subject to legal challenges, as Matheson and Spring Garden homeowners have already voiced noise and traffic concerns.

The investors behind David Beckham’s bid for a Miami soccer stadium have undergone a significant shake-up, with majority partner Todd Boehly out and Miami moguls Jorge and Jose Mas joining the venture, according to several sources close to the talks.

News of the shake-up comes days before the Beckham group hopes to finally win approval from Major League Soccer owners to grant the retired soccer star an expansion franchise in Miami for the deeply discounted price of $25 million.
