Egypt launches second generation of Nilesat satellites in cooperation with France

Egyptian Minister of Information Anas el-Fikki said that Nilesat 201, which is slated for launch on August 4, reflected the depth of Egyptian-French ties under the leadership of Presidents Hosni Mubarak and Nicolas Sarkozy.

The launch of the second generation of Nilesat satellites boosts Egypt's status in this strategic sector, Fikki said in statements Sunday.

Nilesat Company, one of the major television and radio broadcasting service providers, transmits over 560 TV channels and 100 radio stations, the minister noted.

Launch of Nilesat 201 is a tangible leap towards the future, Fikki said, noting that it would meet the demands of Egypt and the Arab area up to 2025.

The Minister entrusted Egyptian Satellite Co. chairman Ahmad Anis to attend the launch ceremony of Nilesat 201 from Kourou base in French Guiana.

NileSat 201 to be launched Wednesday

Information Minister Inas el-Fiqi has announced that Egypt's next-generation satellite--the NileSat 201--will be launched into orbit on Wednesday from a launchpad in French Guiana in Latin America.

"Launching the second generation of NileSat will consolidate Egypt's position in this strategic field," el-Fiqi said, describing the event as "a leap into the future."

The minister went on to explain that the new satellite would provide higher quality television and improved Internet service, adding that he planned to personally follow the launch process from his ministry's central operations room.

NileSat President Ahmed Anis is expected to fly to French Guiana to attend the event. "We will keep working on improving services to our viewers," he said.
