That was planned. They knew that there was going to be a lockout, and the replacement of the G4 program would have to start from scratch, so they just drained the account.

The Key was/is a great basketball venue, but the problem is that it's not up to "code" with today's NBA standards for arenas. Had they waited another say 2 or 3 years to do the renovations to the original Coliseum, I wonder if they would've done some things differently.

They could have gone with a shallower lower level and done a three tier design with a small club/suite level totally separate and gotten a couple thousand more seats in. It would have been a fair bit more expensive needing to do a full three concourses instead of the current two and a half, but it could have been far more NBA viable. Mr Bennett might still have moved the team though, he seemed pretty dead set on OKC from the day he bought the team.

It was also announced that Key Arena will host 2nd and 3rd round (in reality, 1st and 2nd round) mens NCAA basketball games in 2015.

KeyArena NBA memories

Bulls at Sonics 1997. The proposed new Seattle arena may have more suites, more club seats, restaurants, bars and other "points of sale" b.s., but it will have without a doubt inferior sightlines compared to KeyArena. The fans were right on top of the court and it was great. A great venue and an unmatched ambience not seen in today's NBA.

SuperSonics

To the shock of nobody, KeyArena will once again be home to a NBA team for the '13/'14 season as the Maloofs have agreed to sell the Sacramento Kings to the Hansen/Ballmer group. Seattle has a NBA team again. Feel bad for Sacramento, but their loss is the Northwest's gain.

Don't get too excited Seattle, the future SuperSonics are just 13-22. Payton and Kemp aren't on this team.

Sacramento never deserved a pro team in the first place.

Why not? They sold out ARCO Arena for years when the Kings were just awful. It's still a Top 20 television market.

the other Chris Hansen

Q: What are you doing with the wine coolers and condoms?
A: I was just going to talk to her.

I imagine KeyArena will undergo some minor renovations before the preseason begins in October. It will host the Sonics for at least 2 seasons before the new arena is completed.
