Pictures of Toulouse

Now it is Toulouse

It is the city where I was born, and where I'll work (very soon). It was the capital of many fallen kingdom and one of the wealthiest city of Europe for age. It's also in competition with Marseille for the status of oldest French city (Toulouse would have been founded in nearly the 9th century BC). I was first a city state, even in the Roman empire (traditional alliance with Rome), then the capital of the Visigoths' Empire, then of the Kingdom of Aquitaine and finally of the County of Toulouse.

The main landmarks is the Capitole or Capitolium. The building was a ruin in the 18th century. And was entirely rebuilt at the moment. The original date of construction is now lost, but possibly the 9th century. It has two square on each sides. The one in front of it has the Arcades in front of it and the Zodiakal cross, symbol of the city and much more. The part behind it has the keep, wich is now the tourism office. The building itself is now used for minor administrative stuff, wedding, and it's also the operahouse.

The Basilique Saint Sernin is the biggest pure Romanesque church. It was build in the 11th century. It's named after Saint Saturninus who christianised the city and was martyred in. Under the Albigensian crusade who opposed the North to the South of France, Simon de Montfort (there are many Simon de Montfort) died almost at its gate during the siege. And it was the siege of the Inquisition in France. It also has the largest collection of relic in France.

Here is the Ensemble Conventuel des Jacobins. One of the rare example of the Visigothic architecture.

Now here is a second basilica. Notre Dame de la Dorade (the Cathedral of Toulouse is Saint Etienne, but I didn't took it).

Now, here is the Palais des Beaux Arts. An exposition hall for artwork mainly.

The Place Wilson

The Pont Neuf, a pretty old bridge unlike his name means. I the second picture you can also see Notre Dame de la Dorade.

Now the Pont Saint Pierre. On the first two pictures you can also see the Dome de la Grāve and the bell tower of Saint Cyprien (it's not Saint Sernin) if you look closely. The third picture show the Jacobins' building in the distance.

And the last of the three nice bridges of Toulouse, the Pont des Catalans.

Here is the gate to Saint Cyprien, it's a two parts gate.

This building is one of those modern buildings in Toulouse (this one is named Aragon).

Now you can see the Dome de la Grāve, it was an old hospital and now a gallery.

The Abatoirs are now a museum, there is a huge fresque of Picasso but it wasn't in exposition when I came in. So I'll come back another day when it will be avaible (I'll look for a pic of the net but I'll post it apart).

A park, this one is next to the dome.

The Zenith, taken from a friend appartment. It's a concert hall for modern musics.

And now, many street scene. And a view over Toulouse.

"To erect a tall building is to proclaim one’s faith in the future, the skyline is a seismograph of optimism."
