The Miami Herald site, with the parking lot, is just as big as the two overtown sites, including the water and sewer site.

MUCH more appropriate for what they want, and probably better than whatever aborted (if I'm allowed to use that term derogatorily anymore )
project Genting will ever get through.

If the commissioner is so confident that Miami will be the next franchise, we might as well start speculating on the temporary venue the team will use until their permanent home is built. Let the discussion begin... Suggestions? Anyone?

Well, apparently the Herald site is firmly "not for sale", but that would be the best location of all the proposals. Well except that it would mean moving the Metromover guideway, Genting was
either going to do that, or build around it. But a stadium could not do that. When I say the Miami Herald site, I mean the both the building site and the parking lot blocks which are even larger.

Common sense, albeit that it comes out now has cost MLS and other communities real time and money. Not to mention a small public black eye.

Either Marlins Park or FIU Stadium.

Either spend the money to do it right or don't do it at all. These half measures are a joke and setting up for failure down the line.

Well the obvious choice is Hard Rock Stadium, but for some reason or another Stephen Ross hasn't shown much interest in playing nice with MLS. I think marcvader is right, it's gonna be FIU or they'll try and graft some semblance of a soccer field onto Marlins Park. Because of course a Miami MLS team just HAS to happen this next round of expansion for some reason?! (that's another topic for another time)

Let's be honest, Marlins park is probably in a better park than the Overtown Stadium plan lol

Waiting on Beckham

Beckham received a massive discount on his entry fee, $25 million, an option that was included in his playing contract when he was with the LA Galaxy.

MLS has been understanding and lenient with the Beckham ownership group, which includes American Idol creator Simon Fuller and Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure, the past three years as its struggled with similar issues.

The group failed to secure land for a 25,000-seat stadium at the Port of Miami because of push back from the cruise lines, at an unused boat slip near AmericanAirlines Stadium because it would have needed to use a portion of a park owned by the city, and a lot near Marlins Park because private land needed at the site could not be secured.

Finally, Miami Beckham United purchased six acres of private land in the Overtown neighborhood, northwest of downtown Miami, for $19 million, according to the Miami Herald. Miami-Dade County agreed to sell an adjoining three acres, but the deal is stalled while Beckham and Co. interview other potential investors.

Garber said there is a deadline on the deal but will not disclose when that is.

“We are very focused on Miami being our 24th team. And we’ll continue to work with them to try to achieve that,” Garber said. “I remain a big believer in the importance of Miami to extending MLS’s reach to south of the border and to connect with a very diverse and culturally important city in our country.”

“We have a lot invested in it because of the amount of time we’ve spent on it. Everybody needs to understand, including David and his partners, that we’ve worked hard, and it’s time for us to reach a conclusion.”

Multiple reports say Beckham is close to working everything out and the team may begin playing in 2019.

According to Tadd Schwartz a Miami-based spokesman for the Miami Beckham United group, the team is committed to South Florida and working hard to get the deal done.

"Home to a diverse population including many who came to Florida from places where soccer is the national sport, direct access to Europe and Latin America, a passionate fan base, and the highest rates of TV soccer viewership in the U.S., Florida is prime territory for MLS expansion,” Schwartz said, adding the group looks forward to creating rivalries with other clubs in Florida.

Mark Abbott, the MLS president and deputy commissioner, was answering questions about the 12 cities that this week submitted applications for expansion teams. The league will grow from 20 to 22 teams this season with the additions of Atlanta and Minnesota, and Los Angeles FC is expected to begin play in 2018 with Beckham’s proposed Miami team joining as team No. 24, possibly in 2019.

Beckham et al hope to announce investment deal in the coming months. Owners have interviewed a number of potential investors in past few months. One partner or a group of partners could come on board to take a significant stake. There is hope once MLS and local councils approve deal, that team will take field in 2019.

Bad news for Tampa, it seems.

Looks like we'll be needing a temporary soccer venue in Miami ala Minnesota United.

Marlins Park is blocks away from the new stadium site, although it seems relatively unlikely the Marlins would allow it. Hard Rock is a possibility since it has no active tenant during the majority of the MLS season. FIU, while having a pretty cheap stadium, is at least in the city of Miami.
