Move to step up promotion of Malaysia as MICE destination

May 22 2007

FOREIGN delegates attending meeting, incentives, conventions and exhibition (MICE) events are expected to make up 10 per cent of total arrivals and contribute 20 per cent of total tourist receipts from this year, as Malaysia promotes the MICE segment more aggressively.

This means that 2.01 million conference delegates are expected to make their way to Malaysia this year and collectively contribute some RM4.45 billion in tourism receipts and by 2009, some 2.46 million delegates will spend some RM5.39 million here.

This is compared with 2006, when 820,243 delegates spent some RM2.14 billion on items ranging from accommodation, shopping, food & beverage and entertainment.

"We are pushing for 10 per cent of arrivals from the MICE segment from this year," Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said, adding that foreign exchange contribution will double from previously.

The ministry has decided to set up a Malaysian Convention Bureau to help promote Malaysia as a MICE destination.

"We are interviewing consultants with expertise in the area. We will spearhead and be the catalyst. (But) we leave it to the Cabinet to decide if it will be private sector driven or we do it ourselves," he told a press conference after the launch of Global Meet Malaysia 2007 in Langkawi yesterday.

"We expect the bureau to be formed by year- end," he added.

Global Meet Malaysia is an annual MICE familiarisation programme which has been held since 2002.

This year the event is being held from May 19 to 27, is themed "Eco Wonders", emphasising the rich natural heritage, especially the Geopark attraction in Langkawi.

The upcoming events include The World Congress on Information Technology in 2008 (3,000 delegates), World Chambers Congress 2009 (1,000 delegates), World Congress of Accountants 2010 (5,000 delegates) and World Gas Conference 2012 (6,000 delegates).

Popular MICE venue in Malaysia include the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Putrajaya International Convention Centre, Putra World Trade Centre, Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre and Genting International Convention Centre.

Malaysia, has improved its positioning based on the International Congress and Convention Association statistical preview of association meetings held in 2006.

Malaysia improved its position in the ranking to 23rd place in the world compared with 33rd place in 2005.

KLCC gains global recognition

Email us your feedback at fd@bizedge.com

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) continues to gain ground in the international arena as a frontrunner in convention and exhibitions in Asia-Pacific.

It has garnered praise from organisers of international shows held at the centre for its location, professional services, sophisticated audio and visual equipment, among other things.

According to Stephen Kurzawski, vice-president of Messes Frankfurt, which organised the Automechanika Asia 2007 show at the KLCC recently, the purpose-built convention centre's innovative concept as a "city within city" reminded him of Messes' trade grounds in Frankfurt.

"Its location in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, close to many hotels and restaurants, and with excellent connections to other parts of the city, offers a big advantage for trade show visitors," he said.

John Royall, vice-president of US based Pennwell Corporation, which organised the Offshore Asia Conference & Exhibition 2007 at the centre, said its facilities and services are of the highest quality in the world, making it an apt venue for their annual showcase.

KLCC general manager Peter Brokenshire said: "We are delighted that the exhibition industry has taken so well to our venue with its easy access for both visitors and exhibit goods."

Last year, 39 exhibitions were held at the KLCC, attracting some 1.2 million visitors.

In addition to receiving the international Green Globe Benchmarked Status for its environmentally sound practices, the KLCC is also the first in the country to be accredited with the international Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification in recognition of its high hygiene and safety standards.
