3D Hydepark Thread

I guess that this is a good place for any posts which are not connected directly with our galleries topics .

Information for people using ArchiCAD as a BIM tool or just a tool for 3d modelling - starting today AC 17 edu is avaible at MyArchiCAD.com (you don't have to be architecture student to download it).

Me too, but I for some reason did the wrong university and now I am too old to be an architect, starting from scratch.

No . The reason is very simple. And I really don't want to be understand as being rude, so please read it all. In architecture world (between architects and urban planners) those Dubai-like skyscrapers are like the most shittest designs ever. There are some exceptions without the doubt. But like maybe 5? 6? Between architects and urbanists worldwide the Dubai is a phenomenon. Worldwide exporiment for architecture in very bad meaning. It is like architecture disneyland. Trashy objects everywhere. Now leaving the fasades - take a look at the city planning. Do you really want to live in such skyscrapers forest without any sunlight in your appartment? (ex. one of your works but this is absolutely nothing personal - I can choose any work here)

Another thing - people, even in Manhattan are casual owners of their apartment in the skyscrapers. Those are like apartments "During my business flight from LA to NY, then to Moscow an1d then to Tokyo I will stay in ma $100 000 000 apartment". There are only few lights during the night at apartment skyscrapers.
This is sth made for reach people who have 5 houses and many more appartments to live in around the world. Right now we are dealing in Warsaw (Poland) the same problem Złota 44 by Daniel Libeskind is nearly finished. And what? only 20% of apartments are sold (since 2006). The same with Cosmopolitan by Helmut Jahn. About 40% are sold (and it is much more cheaper than Zlota 44).
What is more those building are somehow runing skyline by their proportions.

Returning to your question - the thing is that people are usualy fascinated by anything that is sort of exotic for them. They are not trying to fully understand the story behind such architecture. So they finally approach this forum and see such skyscrapers in main thread and are like "wow, this must be super".

So this is affecting every one (of us), that we must, like in Dubai, put 400m skyscraper next to eachother in the distance of 20m and build city like this . This is a scary vision but this is not your fault. The investors all around the world are rarely thinking about the progresion in urban planning or architecture. Right it is important to build as high building as possible only for people rich as hell ("F... you people from the middle class") which sometimes are visiting their aparments when they are in the city .
*Of course than some people will live there all the time but those are minorities.

That's why I'm not commenting the design here usually . Sometimes I will make a comment when this 3d work is a really nice 3d work and in the same time (what is important) is not Dubai-like vision of the building or city.

You will learn a lot about the history of skyscrapers and generally about urban planning and architeture and you will change your perception immadiately.

I remember myself (long before starting archtiecture) when I was thinking that this is the house I would like to live in because I thought that this is the real architecture . Reason is simple - in Poland, after Soviet Union ages people wanted to build not-socialist-style buildings. So they wanted to build something that is sort of Polish. So everyone wanted to have house sort of the type of residence (XVII-XVIII century). So they started to build such "kitsh-oldstyle-look-residence-wanna-be" houses. Does it mean that this is good architecture. No. It is rubbish as hell. But 99% of people here still want to have houses like this.

The same goes with the apartment buildings.

This is not an architecture. This is mass-living-moneybox for the developers.

Very looong but informative post. Can you give me an example of a non-'shity' skyscraper design?

And one more thing - specially in Dubai you can see a highways in the city center. This is also something different than what is starting all over the World. By that I mean that cars in the city centers are no longer main type of communication. City center are closing slowly for the cars and are opening for the bicycles and just walking passages for people. Existing roads are giving one lane for the buses and one for bicycles leaving only one lane for a car.

Ofcourse here I can see lot of streets with 5 lanes in one direction and aparment building above it . Like someone would really like to leave in such noisy place with the view on the highway .

Again, this is the fault of the developers and experimental cities where you can build whatever you want making gigantic urban and architecture chaos in the cities . Actually you will have next few years to study such problems during your architecture studies

Almost all existing Manhattan is good. Specially old and new WTC towers, and for example MoMA skyscraper by SANAA studio:

The cool thing about this building is that it shape is directed by the context of local highrises (building is directed by the roof lines of neighbour skyscrapers. That's why there is an effect of moved boxes.)

I really want to design a good building. I don't care if people want to criticize it so that I can improve my design
