Nantes looks nice. It's a bit off the radar for Brits and often gets overlooked, I guess because it's not in the main tourist areas although it has a good position between coastal Brittany and the Loire valley.

Nantes is very nice. I stayed in St Malo some years back and drove there for the day. Its a fabulous drive too accross lovely countryside and some great town and villages. The city had a good atmosphere with a nice (but not overwhelming) buzz.

I also really liked Rennes which we also did a day trip to. Much smaller and quieter than Nantes but had a nice cosy feel to it. A bit like a York / Canterbury / Winchester sort of vibe.
