Comval's Solidarity Ring joins Kadayawan

by JP Abayon, ComVal

Nabunturan, Compostela Valley (13 August) -- Bringing with it a message for peace in Mindanao, the Solidarity Ring of Compostela Valley, the biggest gold ring in the Philippines, will join this year's Kadayawan, the Festival of Festivals in the whole island on August 18-24.

Governor Arturo T. Uy took the initiative to bring the 1.5-kilogram gold- and silver- toned ring to Davao's grandest festival following the successful display of its replica at the Compostela Valley booth during the 3rd Mindanao Travel & Tour Expo in SM-Davao City last August 8-10.

Immediately, Governor Uy arranged with the organizers of Kadayawan for his province's participation notwithstanding the security risk that would entail the transport of the ring from Compostela Valley to Museu Dabawenyo in the metropolis where it will be on public display starting with the opening of festivities on Monday, August 18.

In a letter to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, the governor described his province's participation through the Solidarity Ring "a symbolic event of our partnership".

"We know the security risk involved in the transport, display, and safekeeping of our PhP1.5 million Solidarity Ring…but this does not discourage us from joining and becoming a part of this very significant event," Uy said.

For her part, Compostela Valley tourism officer Christine T. Dompor said the display of the ring would be the province's contribution to calls for peace in Mindanao.

"The ring's participation is symbolic," Dompor said.

The ring, an initiative of Governor Uy, was forged to symbolize the political unity in Compostela Valley achieved after he won the 2007 elections. It was unveiled during the First Bulawan Festival of the province last March 3-8, 2008.

An 18-karat two-toned ring with an interior diameter of 5 inches and exterior diameter of 6 inches, it is made up of 1.18 kilograms of gold of shining finish and 308 grams of 99.9 percent pure silver of diamond finish. The ring, weighing 1.488 kilograms, is valued at PhP1.5 million.

KADAYAWAN

2 days to go!

Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan

Once every year, when the harvests are in and the smell of fresh cut grass and a thousand waling-waling blooms fill the night with their heady, sweet smell, the streets of Davao are transformed into wildly pulsating rivers of color by endless rows of parades and flower-decked floats. Like a torrent of rainbows winding wildly around the usually drab black asphalt of this southernmost of Philippine cities, Davao comes alive in an explosion of music, dancing and feasting!

First in trickles, then in ever increasing droves the people come from all the corners of the largest city in the world. They come - from the mountain villages of Mt. Apo to the foothills of Catigan, from the coasts of the Davao Gulf to the forests of Kabakan * they come.

They come on foot, on bikes or buses. Some ride horses and others the venerable Carrabao. But no matter the many varying means of transport that were used, the reason for their being there is but one KADAYAWAN! It is the time of thanksgiving for all the bounty that God, Allah, the Divine Spirits has bestowed on the inhabitants of this pristine paradise. It is the time of singing praises, of offerings and sacrifice. It is a time of dancing. And so dancing there is * and lots of it. From every street corner and alley, Davaoenos take part in the biggest street dancing festival this side of Mardi Gras. Aptly called "Indak-Indakan sa Dalan" * which roughly translates to "Dancing in the Streets," this once a year every-man's fiesta captures the unique spirit of Davao right down to its very core.

During this time, the usually staid Davaoeno throws caution to the winds and breaks out the colorful finery of its past. Mandaya reds mix with T'boli greens and Badjao blues to form a multi-hued, multi-ethnic wave of color and rhythm. The beat of a thousand deer hide drums from the upland slopes of Davao is joined in a magical symphony by powerful rhythm of the Moslem Kulintang in a song that rises to the very gates of heaven. As the parade snakes its way to the narrow side streets and wide avenues of the city, thousands upon thousands of the cities fiesta-crazed inhabitants gather at the sideline, dancing and foot-tapping to the infectious native beat. To this is added the potent mixture of local and foreign tourists who flock to Davao once a year to witness this spectacular event. It is, in short, the perfect formula for a good time.

Barefoot and happy, the dancers in their multi-colored costumes celebrate the goodness of our creator. And though there is no discernable choreography, no rhyme nor reason to the cacophony of music, songs and festive noise, there is unity in the celebration of the people. A sublime joining of spirit, and mind, and soul as an entire city gives thanks to the wonderful year gone past. And the spectacular year that is to come.

Ngayon ko lang nalaman na August din pala ang festival diyan, saka halos magkasingtunog yung pangalan sa Kadayawan. Anyway, sana simultaneous na lang yung holding ng dalawang festivals. Wouldn't that be great?

Diba dati ang name ng festival was St. Augustine festival something?
