Hmm, can you show more of the city, please? - So far, the pics show virtually nothing.

It's just an intro about the city, its traditions... sorry for the pause, I'm about to restart work and have been busy.

The city centre and the river, by the city park

Parque Verde with the foot bridge Pedro e Inês

Coimbra with the city flag

rowing competition

Raínha Santa Isabel. Isabel was the wife of King Dinis in the late 13th and early 14th century. This king was the creator of the university. Isabel had a huge heart and was very kind to the poor, and one day she was delivering bread when the king saw her and asked where she was going. She had the breads hidden in her dress and she, afraid of his answer, answered "they're roses". He asked "roses in January?". She opened the dress and the breads had miraculously turned into roses. It's the Miracle of the Roses and there's the procession that atracts many devoted to her.

Associação Académica de Coimbra, students' association. It's more than 100 years old, has the biggest offer of sports in the country, from football to rugby, from judo to gymnastics and taekwondo, plus cultural groups, theatre, music (including Coimbra fado and popular music groups called tunas), ecology, chess, radio (one of the few radio schools), plus the studying rooms, gardens, cafeteria... plus, AAC plays a major role in the universitary politics and has also a role in portuguese history due to the participation in the students' protest against the regime in 1969. Here is the building and its garden. I like it during the day

those are mensas for the students

recovery of the gardens, good place for a pint

Teatro Académico Gil Vicente, the academic theatre which has many cultural events, concerts of good bands, jazz, theatre, ballet, cinema, conferences...

Santa Clara a Velha Monastery, 13th century monastery for the Clarisse nuns, important for the local culture... and pastry... the monastery lies in the bank of the river, which flooded it for some 4 centuries (I still remember it flooded). In the early 90s, pumping of the water started and in the last decade works recovered the area, cleaned it and it's a beautiful place to visit it.

modern museum

Coimbra has become greener in the recent times

Elevador do Mercado. This lift, for the price of a bus ride, takes us from downtown to uptown, very useful. It's been operating since around the turning of the millenium.

Jardim da Sereia, in the heart of the city. We don't even remember that we are in the middle of the city

we now go to downtown. Avenida Sá da Bandeira and the monument to the portuguese soldiers in the 1st world war

Praça 8 de Maio, by the Monastery of Santa Cruz (Holy Cross), 12th century romanic monastery that holds the tombs of the first two kings of Portugal, where St. Anthony (the famous franciscan monk) studied and which was a national cultural and educational centre in its time, a basis for the university.

art noveau, as far as I know

the icon of Coimbra, the university tower and the old King's palace (alcáçova real)

Coimbra gains a new life after sundown

once again, the botanical garden

winding streets of the Alta (uptown)

portuguese liberty troubadour José Afonso lived here while he was studying and developing his influence in the local Fado

Sé Velha, old Cathedral, also of the 12th century, in pedra de Ançã, local variety of calcary, very easy to work on

at a Taizé prayer I attended years ago

winding streets

Quebra Costas and a pause for a typical portuguese ginja (liquor made from wild cherry), moscatel or some snacks

Aristides de Sousa Mendes was a consul in Bordeaux, France, who in the time of the nazi persecution to the Jews, signed tens of thousands of visas to let Jews enter Portugal and escape death. Portugal was neutral, but helped both sides in the 2nd war, and dictator Salazar didn't like his actions, and fired Aristides. He lived in misery ever after, but still revered by the Jewish.

Casa de Sobre Ripas and its Manueline (King Manuel) art work

Arco de Almedina (one of the doors of the ancient city wall)

from uptown

to downtown

I'll be back with many more

let's ask for a beer and enjoy the spring

near our friendly city's new pet, this bear

by the river once again

May has the academic festivity Queima das Fitas (party during a whole week), which starts with the Serenata in the Old Cathedral, and the parade with the cars and the students who say hello or goodbye to their academic life. June has the Medieval Fair also in the square of the Old Cathedral, plus some festivities for the Saints (especially St. John, June 24th). In July, if you are religious, the Raínha Santa Festivities are a must see, especially the night Procession.

more of Sé Velha (Old Cathedral)

during the medieval fair

ho ho ho!

Torre de Anto, an ancient tower of the city walls, portuguese poet António Nobre lived here

some modernity, a university students' residence

escadas monumentais... 125 steps to the university...

Procissão da Raínha Santa Isabel

Hotel Astoria

in the university, Sala do Exame Privado (ancient King's Room, in 1537 the first seat of the university council met here. Students then did their final examination here, away from everyone's sight, so the name "of the private exam"). Paintings show the first degrees that started being taught when the university was created.

ceiling of St. Michael's Chapel

other rooms, this one is Sala das Armas

where the university council meets

a pause

downtown

Igreja de S. Tiago

Café Santa Cruz, great place for coffee and for cultural events like exhibitions, fado shows...

Monastery of Santa Cruz

5 Morocco Martyrs, franciscan priests that went to Morocco to spread the word and who were made martyrs... it impressed young student Fernando Martins de Bolhões, who followed Franciscanism, changing his name to António. His action made the church consider him Saint shortly after his death and he's revered in many many places, Italy has him all over.

not my photo, but this is the tomb of D. Afonso Henriques, founder of the country

the court

Rua da Sofia (sophos = wisdom), where universitary colleges started in the churches, hence the name of the street.

now to end this post, some traditional pastry:

arrufadas

pastéis de Santa Clara

from a village nearby called Tentúgal, they are very famous around here and delicious. To make those thin leaves of the crusty part, they had to stretch the dough to its maximum (which would be some square metres) and would have to read the bible through it, to achieve transparency... and without breaking!)... there's a video on youtube about it

downtown

in uptown students studied and did their crazy lives. Downtown, the commerce and services thrived and experts would concentrate in different streets, hence their names. Padeiras (female bakers)

by night

Arco de Almedina, ancient door... there's a small shop with Fado and books and other vintage stuff, I love passing by

ancient student

serenade

tricana... the lady who sold things or who carried goods...

hello

uptown

loggia of the Machado de Castro museum... this one is built on the foundations of the local roman forum which, surprisingly, sat on a hill, which made them build a criptoporticum... I have photos somewhere

Praça da República, a meeting poing near ther university, the academic facilities... and some bars

the army was doing some show off

ancient representation of the national government in the region (distrito)

Enjoy, I'll post more soon!

I had to post these, view from uptown to the park and the Mondego... mata do Botânico... breathtaking and relaxing... and in the middle of the city

ok, see you soon!

homenagem a Agostinho Neto em Coimbra

Jardim da Sereia e parte do antigo Exploratório da Ciência Viva

no meio da cidade....

feira medieval, com início marcado por missa na Sé Velha

José Afonso viveu aqui

e mergulhamos no tempo

descanso de umas batalhas...

este é Mouro, ou pelo menos Moçárabe (mouro convertido)

bom apetite

leitura da carta de feira

esta lê a sina nas mãos

Sé Velha, a Porta Especiosa

doçaria: tigelada

dança do ventre

sopa?

afiadinha

o rei à conversa

buuuhhh
