Utar’s main campus opens

KAMPAR: Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) celebrated another milestone with the official opening of its main campus here.

MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said it was “an historic day” commemorating the completion of part of the first phase, which includes lecture halls, laboratories, a student centre and a conference complex.

“This Utar campus is not just for Perak folk but for students from all over the country. Utar is for all races and there are no restrictions on any ethnic group.

“It is up to the students to apply to enter. Those who are interested and qualify will be given places,” he said at the opening ceremony yesterday.

Natural surroundings: An overall view of the first phase of the Utar campus in Kampar, Perak.

Also present were Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali and Utar council chairman Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik.

The ceremony also marked the Kampar campus’ first intake of nearly 500 students for its one-year Foundation in Arts or Science programmes.

Ong said Utar was the culmination of a dream by the MCA and the Chinese community to secure quality education for generations of students.

He expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his predecessor Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for their continuous support of Utar.

Since Utar welcomed its pioneer batch of 411 students in June 2002, the university now boasts an enrolment of more than 17,000 students, noted Ong.

To a question, he said Utar had no plans to open branch campuses in other states because it wanted to concentrate on developing its main campus site here.

Dr Ling expressed confidence that students would find an ideal and conducive environment to study with the campus so close to nature surrounded by lakes and limestone hills.

“I have been a witness to the realisation of our Kampar dream. From a blueprint design to the groundbreaking and now its opening, I am looking forward to witnessing the future growth of the Perak campus,” he said.

Tajol Rosli thanked the MCA for choosing Kampar, noting that the university would generate economic activities for local residents and the surrounding areas.

He announced that the state government and the Perak Barisan Nasional would each contribute RM100,000 towards the Utar fund.

Students excited to be pioneers at Kampar varsity
KAMPAR: Colourful balloons took to the air as officials watched the planting of Blue Pine trees in front of the Heritage Building at the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) campus here.

Led by MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting, the planting of the saplings outside the administration block was among the highlights marking the opening ceremony of the campus yesterday.

It was then that more than a hundred students looking on cheered at the top of their voices, realising that they would be the first to make their mark at Utar’s Perak campus.

Eighteen-year-old R. Renuka was excited at the thought of being one of the pioneer students.

“It’s like we’re both juniors and seniors at the same time,” she said after the opening ceremony.

Renuka, from Batu Gajah, praised the Utar campus for its strategic location, convenient bus services and the availability of “good Chinese, Malay and Indian food!”

She said one of their hopes was to set up clubs and extracurricular activities for the student community here.

“I’m thinking about a dance club because it would be very interesting to learn salsa and other ballroom dances,” said Renuka, who is aiming for a career in public relations.

Fellow student S. William Sagayaraj, 18, hoped to have a music society because he was a keen drummer.

“I’m proud to be here, especially since I’ve heard good things about Utar from newspapers, magazines and the Internet.

“The courses are affordable and I want to learn chemical engineering. I’ve always been interested in mixing things during chemistry class since I was in school,” he said.

Johor lass Laura Lee Hermescec, 18, also agreed that the courses were reasonably priced, especially since she aims to be a pharmacist.

“Although I’m pretty far from home, I want to learn to be independent and learn to do everything on my own,” she added.

Ipoh-born Tan Khai Ning, 18, welcomed the opportunity to stand on her own and make new friends.

“I’m taking a Foundation in Arts programme now but my ambition is to be a graphic designer,” said Khai Ning, who was also attracted to the affordable prices.

Earlier, Ong, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali and Utar council chairman Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik marked the opening ceremony by cutting the ribbon together with Utar president Tan Sri Dr Ng Lay Swee.

It is a lake - a former tin mine lake. Perak was a top tin producer decades ago. Many lakes can be found in the state including few in and around UTAR main campus.

judging from the building design i think MMU and UTAR share the same architectural firm. But since TM is so stingy and not willing to pay more for buildings, UTAR looks better.
