It is named after the Escavos River which runs through the area. Back in the days of colonialism that area was heavily involved in the slave trade between the Portuguese and the Americas. The Portuguese actually named quiet a few locations during their exploration of West Africa. Hence why there are some West African areas that have Portuguese names, Lagos being the most in recognized.

There are so many of these colonial names....from terrible sources...and I spoke about it here...in another thread in the Oasis.
Lekki for example is the name of a Portuguese Slave trader, but Nigerians are happy with such names - they don't find it the least bit insulting.

When they first came back from Brazil in the 19th century , yes they spoke Portuguese. But I don't know if they still speak Portuguese in their family line, I doubt it.
