KANSAS CITY - Sprint Center (18,972)
No professional teams play here now, other than an arena football team, but there is hope that an NBA or NHL team relocates to KC soon. The arena hosts the CBE Classic, a college basketball tournament, the Big 12 Tournament, and also a couple college basketball games each year, along with concerts.
Capacity: 19,252 (concerts) 18,972 (basketball) 17,544 (hockey) 17,297 (arena football) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]()

Was it worth it? To build a brand new arena just to only have an arena football team call it home. A cautionary tale. Field of Dreams was just a movie.

Dude, the purpose of a multi-purpose arena is to hold several events and that's what they're doing. It's obviously not just being used for AFL. Why not build it? |

just to clear things up, the arena football team no longer plays here. They have a new owner and are playing in Kemper arena next season, which is where the indoor soccer team also plays.
Sprint Center is a big concert/event venue and is turning a profit without a pro team and has played a key part of revitalizing downtown by bringing in thousands of people into the power and light district every week. I've been to many concerts there and several sporting events such as sold out NHL preseason games and skateboard streetleague and its a cool arena, it was worth building even without a major team playing there. Its been said the city could lose money if a pro team moved in because there would be less available dates for all the other events it hosts. |

^Yup.
I am sure they still make money without NBA or NHL tenant but no doubt they want one to maximize the venue date. |

Since it would take free rent to lure a team and concerts can generate $100,000+ for the arena, I think it makes more financial sense to host concerts every weekend rather than give some millionaire NBA owner free rent. I would love to get an NHL team personally but I hate seeing cities give tax money to these teams.

AEG are right. Why give money to a pro team when you can make money with dates you obviously can fill already? If a team wants to move there, that team would have to buy out AEG's stake in the arena since paying rent doesn't make sense for a pro team unless they are very big (like the Lakers or Celtics). The Sprint Center is the 3rd busiest arena in the US. It doesn't need a pro team as a tenant.
