Christchurch was well on its way at one stage to possibly rivalling Wellington, there was that much construction on the drawing boards during the late 80s, when the stockmarket crash happened it, left what was only a small portion of developments actually coming to fruition.

tower..

yes it does cross the mind doesn't it.. would it have stood up and just swayed a little or would it have come twisting down! If it was the latter it would have substantially added to the loss of life given that the feb quake was around lunch time so the viewing platforms and cafeteria would have been busy..

And what was to be the construction type? does anyone know? would it have been designed/built to meet worst case earthquake scenario standards ( is there a standard "tower" construction method that is used around the world) or would it have been done on the cheap and be a risk to us all... does provide interesting thinking. I don't know of any viewing towers around the world that have been subject to earthquake damage

Any news on this project? Maybe they got cold feet, It has not got underway and the lower levels of the BNZ are still standing on this site. Are there new plans to repair it and lease it out for office space?

In case anyone didn't know and was wondering, this ones cancelled.
Govt was going to lease it but kept low-balling developer with the amount they would pay for the lease. Developer told them to get lost and then I'm pretty sure left town after that.

Warren and mahoney's website has taken down its renders for this project. So it would seem the above post is true. Soo annoying! Anyone know what the most likely scenario is for this site? Wish they would hurry up and build something!

I'd say we'll see a new building here eventually, the cathedral isn't exactly helping the square at all. I do doubt that they will fix the old tower podium as it looks pretty stuffed from the outside. Besides, it was built to be a podium, not a standalone building.

Its funny that they've removed this project, but not the Rural Bank House which was cancelled back in 2012.

This is how the site currently looks. They only stopped demolition due to asbestos being found in the building. This was over two years ago though so I have no idea what is happening now.

The asbestos is long gone. CERA signed a contract to demolish the entire thing, but then did a runner once the removal was complete. Leaving the base to rot. They did the exact same maneuver with the Govt Life building, only finally finishing the demo this year.

This building has a fence around it now with Pace demolition signage up so maybe they will finish it off soon to ground level.

It always has. The Pace stuff has been there for at least 2 years.
