Proposed life sciences park to be modelled on Singapore science park

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An offshoot of Emerging Kerala, the proposed Life Sciences Park in an expanse of 260 acres in Veiloor Village near Thonnakkal in Thiruvananthapuram, will be modeled on the Singapore Science Park (SSP). It is expected to become a hub of biotech, nanotech, pharma companies and an innovation corridor with research and development organizations.

"Many biotech firms have evinced interest to set up their units at the Life Science Park. One of them, a Chennai-based biotech firm, has confirmed their decision. As many as 10 centers, including a medical devices cluster has been planned to be set up at the Park. We are awaiting formal clearance from the Central Department of Science and Technology (DST) to launch the project," industries additional chief secretary V Somasundaran told TOI.

"Deliberations are on with the Singapore authorities so that the Life Science Park here could be modeled on the lines of the Science Park there. Business incubation facilities for value addition will also form part of the project. Discussions are on with architects, designers and planners," Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) managing director Tom Jose said. The Central Department of Biotechnology has assured to offer an assistance of Rs 15 crore for the project, he added.

The project is expected to take off in about two months, KSIDC officials said.

The project is planned to be developed as a Knowledge Centre with two critical components, an Incubation Centre (IC) and Technology Development Centre (TDC), KSIDC project head Jyothi Kumar said.

The IC will provide basic infrastructure to biotech firms and will assist them for three years to become self-sustainable till they make profits and venture out. TDC will facilitate start-ups, small and medium IT players, inventors and entrepreneurs to make their business competitive in the market.

A few biotech experts from the state have also approached KSIDC to set up incubation facility in biodegradable membrane for burn treatments, dental applications, health drinks and pharmaceutical products based on ayurveda.

Incubation facilities at the Life Sciences Park will be offered scientific assistance by six leading research institutions in the state.

The Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) will support in molecular biology and drug discovery, Tropical Botanical Garden Research Institute (TBGRI) in natural extract based pharmaceutical products, Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) in advanced biotech-based cancer therapy, Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI) in agri-biotech, natural extracts for health drinks, Sri Chitra Thirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology (SCT-IMST) in medical biotech and National Institute of Interdisciplinary Sciences and Technology (NIST) in bio-resource and microbial technology

Centre sanctions Rs 13.60 crore aid for Kovalam beach

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Union tourism ministry has sanctioned Rs 13.60 crore for development of common amenities at the famous coastal tourism spot Kovlam near here.


Union minister of state for HRD Shashi Tharoor, who represents Thiruvananthapuram in the Lok Sabha said, he had received a letter from Union tourism minister K Chiranjeevi on sanctioning of the fund.

Tharoor had taken up the proposals in this regard with the Centre.

The fund would be utilised for taking up schemes such as improving the bus stand, road sides and pathways to the beach, which are thronged by a large number of international and domestic tourists every year, Tharoor said in a statement here today.
