Australia's Telstra Exchanges

Most cities have several prominent Telstra Exchanges. Many of them are hideous monstrosities. Some of them aren't too bad:

Charlotte Exchange, Brisbane

Lets see some pics of other exchanges around the country.

Sydney's Kent St Exchange takes the cake. Thank goodness Westpac will block it from some angles.

its pretty hard to make exchanges look good. There built to hold communications equipment and are uninhabited ,so no windows are required. most dont require glass only a brutalist reinforced concrete or panelled facade.Im pretty sure Telstra havent got architecture asthetics in mind when developing an exchange, just as long as its fucntionnal and suits councils requirements.

They should. There should be a law in place which forbids shit architecture. A good punishment would be sending the perpertrator into the BB house.

Woolloongabba Exchange, Brisbane - quite hideous, particularly out there all on its lonesome

Edison Exchange, Brisbane - not sure if this one is still in use???

The Lonsdale Street exchange in Melbourne is the worst by far, it doesn't even have any try hard concrete decorative slits or anything. It's just a gigantic red brick veneer wall rising up behind the beautiful Supreme court building.

I have to second that... this one wins hands down. Just imagine working in this thing, only one set of windows in that pic... hilarious!

One of the better ones - Melbourne's City West exchange. This is located right behind the Monster From Lonsdale Street.

^ I'd say the Lonsdale building is just an extension of that - on the SE corner of Queen and Little Bourke Streets, the 20l orange brick thing, that's an old Telecom office (opposite 200 Queen) - just like in the East end, the HQ is now nextdoor to their largest exchange in the country - dunno if that old building was once the HQ, but they obviously like(d) to keep their offices close to their exchanges.

When I was over in Adelaide, looking at the Advertiser development site etc, I went a bit further down Waymouth street and actually saw, what I think, was call centre workers (That are very abundant at Telstra!) actually walking into Waymouth exchange, unless there are other Telstra offices elsewhere nearby in Adelaide??

Is the Telstra building (3rd tallest?) in Adelaide on Flinders St?? If so that's probably the same, office & exchange in the same building.

Telstra's big nodes, starting in the west:

Perth
Pier & Wellington

Adelaide
Waymouth & Flinders

Melbourne
Exhibition, Lonsdale & Windsor

Hobart
Davey

Canberra
Civic

Sydney
Kent, Pitt, City East (Paddington) & Chatswood

Brisbane
Woollongabba, Charlotte & Valley

the next one likely to become fairly important will be Batman (Flinders lane from memory) - as it's going to cover all of Docklands, and covers the lower West end now.
