True. Some parts of Kinshasa are very nice (I've never been there so I'm judging this solely on the pictures that I have seen on here.) Other parts, however, leave a lot to be desired. In every city, there are good parts, and bad parts

Can the average Congolese afford luxurious delicacies that are traditionally reserved for Mende and other government's dignitaries and aristocrats?
I would be glad rather to learn how Ngaba, Kingasani........Boma, Masina, Butembo, Mbandaka, Mwene Ditu....Selembao, Rutshuru's folks are coping with the current nationwide famine due to joblessness (88%) |

Don't give me that! Are you living on Mars? Maybe you left Congo 50 years ago but even then bread wasn't for everyone's income. Obviously in your comfort zone of the western hemisphere it's hard for you to imagine that everything you take for granted is a luxury elsewhere for the average citizen. You seem to be totally disconnected with Congo's reality Butembo. Wake up and smell the coffee!

Since when did bread become a luxury in Congo. Stop cheap discussion. You are making yourself look ridiculous.

Butembo is not completly wrong on this one because bread is no longer a luxury for not just for the upper class, but as well as the middle class and some of the working class Congolese in kinshasa specially. You all are aware of the trend of more and more kinois shopping in supermarkets nowadays.

I was reading an article on radio okapi, based on a research conducted 54% of Kinois are now doing their shoping at supermarkets, rather than your traditional open market

Not only the article but one of the earliest Congolese forumer on here said a few years ago how Kinois were shopping more and more in supermarkets.
In Goma; the giant neighborhood of Mabanga and Katindo(I'm sure Pius and those familiar with Goma know what kind of neighborhood i'm talking about ) are were i was born and grew up. there are countless small bread makers. talkless of the famous slum of Birere and other areas. and the farine is available. not as expensive as gold or diamonds. Mr Epaphras, making bread is not some highly skilled job. it's as easy as cooking rice.

I think many of us under estimate the growth of the middle class in Congo, despite all conflict in the east, the bad governance and corruption. the middle class is definately emerging.

On the other hand, Epaphras has a point because the lower class Congolese is the majority in Congolese society. Rural Congolese account for almost 70 % of the population still. They outnumber the elites, middle class and working class combined. They mostly don't get to consume the kind of breads put on display in the picture
A word of advice: we all should stop being snobs and refrain from looking down or calling out the rural or village Congolese. They are still the majority and they will continue to influence our country's stats for a while |

In villages of course people barely get that bread. But in cities its not the reality. Everyone know villages are not easily accessible due to lack of roads. That shouldn't be a surprise.

Ci dessous un article datant de 2010. Le pain au Congo n'est pas un luxe il fait partir avec le maïs et le manioc des biens de premier nécessité.

I don't think anyone here is looking down on rural or Congolese in villages. I only mentioned village because that's where braid is or would be luxury. as it said. villages are very underdeveloped and hardly get access to items of basic necessaries. something that is not a luxury to most urbanites will easily be a luxury in rural/villages.
