Time to let go of the outdated jeepney, transportation adviser says

(snipped)

“The jeepney has not received any innovation (since 1950). Why do we call it an icon of pride when it should be a symbol of shame?” he said during his talk.:cheers:

Santiago, who has been a consultant for the Asian Development Bank and World Bank, argues that jeeps are often “islands in themselves” since they are usually not part of an integrated transportation system. Drivers are also forced to work long hours due to the boundary system.

My suggestions for the jeepney...

1. Replace the engine with a more powerful one. Basta wag lang Ferrari engine. Baka maging street racing capital ang Maynila...
2. Make it enclosed. Move the entrance from the back to the sides, just like any other public transport vehicle para madali ang pag-disembark ng mga pasahero sa mga dedicated stops.
3. Add airconditioning.
4. Designated route and stops. Make dedicated stops that do not take away a lane of road width. Mala-emergency bay, ika nga.
4. And more importantly... Hire drivers that actually have experience in driving. Number one cause of traffic other than the sheer lack of mass transit in the metro are the undisciplined, unexperienced drivers who got their license only by the "awa money" of the Lagayan Talamak Office. :naughty:
5. Fire all the incompetent, kickback hungry LTO officers that started all the chaotic, onli inda pilipins driving style of most Pinoys nowadays. :naughty:

If those ever happened, the term "Pinoy Pride" will make sense than ever.

The Jeepny is a Dinosaur. Just get rid of it altogether. Its been around since the time of McArthur:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

CNG powered MiniBus is the way to go, with fixed routes and stations.

The solution is there, used successfully in many countries, for many years.

Political Will is needed to get rid of that "FILIPINO SHAME".

I think we should take a look into the root cause of these problems about the jeepney. It's not the jeepney itself and the lack of drivers' education. These are just two of the frontliners but behind all of these is the one giant monster of them all...Poverty with a capital P. Unless and until we shall be able to get over this hump it will always be difficult to find a solution to these jeepney, traffic and pollution problem. You would only create another problem by totally getting rid of the jeeps, at least in the metro all at once. There should be a protractive step by step solution to this. As we may all know driving is one of the easiest and most available job there is, not only in Pinas but in other countries as well. How do we feed all the people that are dependent on this source of living if we go the drastic way? I think it will just create another disaster .

Tama. Govenment must realize that this "backyard business" will not just disappear overnight so there is an urgent need to support it by improving the technology use in the production og jeepneys. Based on the earlier post that I made a few months ago, DOST is in the process of building a laboratory intended to improve the design and the technology in the production of jeepneys, tricycle and other locally fabricated vehicles.

well jeepneys are perfect mass transportation in PH cities whats lacking is innovation. 20 years its design has changed a little and it is because of our economic situation. you cant just have a good well design mass transport with low economy. you all say " itapon yan mga bulok na yan" well what on earth will you replace ? a bus? a new untested ,expensive e jeepneys? a van? please people !

#1,406 ·
What do you mean low economy? Our GDP went up by 7% compared from other ASEAN nations. Jeepney itself is not the fault of the traffic but the drivers themselves. How do you expect traffic to move if Jeepney drivers wait for at least 3-5 minutes for passengers at the side of the road. I would like to add that the passengers themselves cause traffic by waiting on the road itself, isn't that the reason why we build pedestrian sidewalks?

#1,407 ·
it just went up 7% faster that others but the total gdp maybe 6300
and yes part of the urban planing was the side walk and every city had it but illegal vendors occupy and the reason is the low economy again, why jeepneys wait for 2-5 min because they are self employed, no one regulate the volume of jeepneys which was the job of the government. you know the jeepneys age is not the only problem there are a lots of reasons interconnecting each other and its middle was the economy.

#1,408 ·
The number of street vendors does not necessarily mean that we're a low economy. Anyway back on point, jeepney drivers (generally speaking) do not follow the traffic rules and they cause accidents. The governments job is to give out licenses and franchises to those who have the discipline and patience on the road but sadly it's mired with corruption. The jeepney is not an efficient transportation system and one of the main contributors of pollution in the Metro. I would like to see more rail lines around the city and pedestrians walking to designated stations rather than wider roads and jeepneys stopping wherever they please.

Meanwhile, in india:

^^And to think, they have a BIGGER economy than us to the point of reaching a super power status.

It's not the vehicle's fault why it causes heavy traffic and air pollution, its both the owner fault and the government's incompetency in implementing rules and regulation. Hello EDSA buses, i'm looking at you.

Instead of purging the jeepneys, i'm all in for modernizing it and as for efficiency, everything can be efficient if our government is actually competent in enforcing the law.

Agree.

Jeepney manufacturing is a miniscule sector of the auto industry and also corners a very miniscule market. They are alot of modern vehicles that can be considered as alternatives to this ugly and obslete jeepenys.

Pero we should be realistic that this type of vehicle and the industry that support it will not just go away in a few years.

What we can do is clamor and or help in improving the technology of producing them and force its manufacturers, operators and driver to follow standards.

yeah what ever you all said, but it is the proper mass transport the only problem is it dosent have a proper engine, suspension, chassis, and a body but the layout is superb the rear doors for faster in out and maybe in the future ad another doors on the side for better circulation.

#1,413 ·
You gotta be kidding! Superb Layout? Faster in out? Have you clocked how long it takes for people to get in and out of the jeep? Have you felt how uncomfortable it is to go in and out and get a seat in a cramped jeepney? The design is already outdated and inefficient and it has to go. It has served its time and we have to move on. We are better off using low floor buses.

#1,416 ·
Sa palagay nyo hindi na maiimprove ang drainage so we just have to live with an outdated and cramped design?

Other countries have floods too but it did not stop them from adapting this design because the benefits outweigh the disadvantage.

Ano nangyari? Bakit dati, ang cute cute ng jeep?

Hinde ba pwede ganitong desing, pero, over sized?

#1,426 ·
yeah, I don't understand why we are sticking to 'Sarao' mentality if they are actually capable of building a four door sedan instead.

If 4 young guys can create a race car with Honda or Mitsubishi engine in it (which was even featured in Yahoo), what makes a sedan so hard to make. I think they should just hire those 4 to build a car for them.

This is how the Korean car making industry started.

Looks better that the old jeepney. Now, DOST should help in refining the design, engineering and production aspect.
