Bikes and Bicycling

I'm pretty surprised that the Philippine Forums does not have a dedicated thread on the concepts of bicycles and cycling. I mean, bike-to-work and bike sharing are popular movements that are spreading around the world, yet I sense that the Philippines has not yet fully caught on with the bicycling culture.

On this thread, the following topics can be discussed:

- Biking basics (helmets, safe speeds)
- Bike infrastructure (bike lanes, specialized bike traffic lights, bike boulevards)
- Cycling programs (bike-to-work, bike sharing)
- Biking and Public Transportation (bikes on trains, buses)
- Other cycling issues (bike incidents, bike storage, lockers)

Let me start with what I believe can work for Manila, Cebu, and other tourist destinations in the Philippines: bike sharing. I'll illustrate what it is in pictures...

I believe that bike racks and lockers can also be placed on sidewalks, on buses (as foldable bike racks), and inside the paid area of LRT and MRT stations and near platforms of PNR stations and bus terminals.

And by the way, I could also suggest putting bike lanes and bike-only roadways to allow cyclists to get around cities and attractions.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this discussion will go! And by the way, this is my gift to you to celebrate my first anniversary here at SSC.

^^

#72 ·

Re: 8-9 speeds

ok lang mga yun, basta nandyan yung commonly used gear ratios. Kaso, past 10 speeds hindi na ata practical yun for bike commute, though surely may use siya for recreational purposes.

Re: breaks

Very true. :)

V brakes, if tuned properly and with the right break pads, mas malakas pa yan sa disc breaks.

Emergency stop ba ang ginawa mo?

Wow, I'm really impressed at how my latest thread has come along, with all these biking tips, bicycle parts and functions, and safe cycling techniques... Talagang inspired ako na kumuha ng foldable bike soon kasi mahilig talaga ako mamisikleta, kahit for long distances.

Tapos yung Firebird Luneta -> Tagaytay and back.

Click here to read about "the 125 mile folding bike ride."

PS: Check the comments section and you will see that he did finish the 125mi, though I hope they documented the whole thing.

I could stretch my wallet up to 30k for a bike

If you're not into folding bikes, there are lots of full size 26ers(also 29ers) mountain bikes to choose from that are available in the market like the ff:

Cannondale,GT Avalanche,Giant,Mongoose,Vision Chase 1.5,Schwinn,SGM Soul,Fuji Nevada,Orbea,Merida mountain bikes and a lot more. These bikes are within P16,000 budget and you can go with it on heavy trails by replacing the fork with one of the most durable fork like the EPICON .:)
