Here's a highly utopian plan for a World Capital, or World Center, concieved by Ernest Hebrard in 1912. There was supposed to be an international court in the city which would be located on the U.S. Atlantic, Italian, or Spanish coast. From what I can see, there should be over 30 of these illustrations, but this is all I've found.

I really dig the bug-like plane!

Here are some designs from Kansas City.

Union Station

Here's what got built.

Liberty Memorial

Here's what got built.

I've got more over at KCRAG, but they're mostly modern, so I wasn't sure if they'd fit here.

I stumbled upon some more wonderful city beautiful designs by Edward H. Bennett, co-author of the 1909 Chicago plan yesterday so ... here's the first one: The Greater Portland (Oregon) Plan of 1912

A somewhat blurry overview: (the illustrations are taken directly from a hundred year old book)

The proposed water front:

Greater Portland viewed from a hillside vista point:

And the proposed civic centre:

Two anternative relations for the Union Station:

"Report of the Capitol Approaches Commission to the Common Council of the City of St. Paul (Minnesota)"

What the area surrounding the then newly built capitol building looked like:

What they wanted to do:

A proposed new cathedral at the end of the avenue:

* Note that I have no idea of what actually got built, but I assume most of it wasn't.

Next is "The Plan of Minneapolis, prepared under the direction of the Civic Commission" (1917)

I found lots of pictures of this one, so I'll divide it into two posts.

I'll begin with the colored ones:

"The sixth avenue artery":

"Bird's-eye view of the station plaza":

"The civic plaza, looking west from eighth street along sixth avenue":

The building to the right here is the institue of art, and actually got built, but the surroundings look completely different:

And here are various other drawings and renderings:

"Bird's-eye view of street completions in the central district":

"Three centers linked by Park Avenue prolonged":

"Sketch of the Sixth Avenue point in northeast Minneapolis":

The civic plaza:

"The Lake Harriet water-gate":

"Bird's-eye view of the proposed treatment of the intersection of Cedar Avenue, Fifteenth Avenue south and Washington Avenue":

I think this was part of the waterfront:

Here's a plan around the river:

And this is the plan for the University of Minnesota:

Wow, from this angle it looks identical with the new Renzo Piano courthouse in Paris. Even the railway tracks correspond!

^ I can't see those pics of Hamburg's Messehaus

Better go for Imgur or some other uploading service.

Seems like my Flickr account went haywire. I'll try and get around to it.
