Wait a second, this says something else.

“We are in the process of devising a strategy for our flights to the US, and will have something more concrete by Monday,” PIA Spokesperson Mashood Tajwar said while talking to The Express Tribune.

I read last year that PIA wanted to switch from JFK Airport to Newark Airport...maybe this could possibly be the change.

I hope this is it...
They're most probably looking for a codeshare with an American airline that can take passengers onwards from LHR or MAN.

Every 3 months we hear that pia is going to upgrade its 777's for a better inflight product, for God's sake when? People no longer give a shit that it's their national airline, they just want the best product for their money. It feels like PIA is still living in the 90's. It'll be sad to see it getting shut down just sell the airline plz!

Why would anybody fly that though? It's better off than flying Emirates, Qatar or Etihad and stopping over in Gulf for then a short 2 hour flight to Pakistan.

Stopping over in Manchester, only to get on another 7 hour flight isn't at all appealing...at least to me.

I still think PIA is contemplating changing airports in New York.

I have repeated on so many occasions the need for PIA to resume services to Nairobi; Beirut, Cairo and start ones to Mauritius and South Africa. PIA flew to these destinations for 50 plus years. The reason is every second middle class family is now going on safari holidays to Kenya and South Africa or holidays to Lebanon, Mauritius and Egypt. Plus Business (and cargo) travel is also increasing. So at least Kenya Airways realised the potential,if PIA is till lost in stupidly. There's also a huge Pakistan origin community in both Kenya and South Africa.
Also it's good to see different Iranian airlines increasing flights to Pakistan. With a quarter of the population being Shia, the potential for pilgrims is huge.At least PIA is now flying to Najaf in Iraq.

PIA incurs losses worth over Rs146 billion in last 4 years

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) suffered losses amounting to more than Rs146 billion during the last four years, according to a statement submitted by the Minister in Charge of the Aviation Division.

The details, submitted in response to a question by PPP MNA Shahida Rehmani during the National Assembly session on Monday, stated that after rising losses in 2013, the trend reversed in 2014 and 2015, with the airline incurring 27 per cent less losses.

However, the reply stated, a surge in losses in 2016 was expected due to increasing financial expenses resulting from PIA's acquisition of new aircraft on lease and payment of mark-up on legacy loans, among other things.

The national flag-carrier thus incurred estimated losses worth Rs37bn in 2016 alone.

According to the details provided by the minister, the airline incurred the following losses in past four years:

2013: 44.32 billion
2014: 32.22 billion
2015: 32.53 billion
2016: 36.95 billion (estimated)

The revelation comes as the national carrier is mulling suspending its flight operation for the United States from January next year, primarily because of ‘low traffic’.

The airline has stopped booking for its twice-a-week flights for New York from November onward. However, it will continue to operate its two weekly flights — Lahore-New York and Karachi-Lahore-New York — until Dec 31.

“The PIA is considering closing its flight operation for the US till the financial health of the organisation improves,” a senior official privy to the development had told Dawn on Saturday. “The national flag carrier is already facing acute financial crunch, therefore, it cannot operate on routes which are running in losses,” the official had said, adding that the PIA’s accumulative loss was over Rs300 billion.

When contacted, PIA spokesman Mashood Tajwar had said that the decision regarding continuing the flight operation for New York after December would be taken in the coming weeks.

The best that can happen for PIA is to let it fail.

Chairman Shaheen Air Complains Against Double Standards in Pakistan's Aviation Industry

https://twitter.com/ShaheenAirline/s...58935774007296

https://twitter.com/ShaheenAirline/s...57777827262464

Chairman Shaheen Air International (SAI) Kashif Sehbai has said that future of privately-owned airlines in Pakistan is in danger due to double standards in country's aviation industry. Operating private airlines has become difficult due to hurdles and under such conditions he sees end of private airlines in next five years. Karachi's landing charges are double that of Dubai, he said.

Private airlines were not consulted on the introduction of National Aviation Policy in 2015. How can we get solution to our problems when posts of Chairman PIA, Secretary Aviation and Chairman CAA Board are held by the same person who in such situation cannot take action against himself and do justice, he said.

Delaying tactics are used against private airlines that pay millions of dollars. A number of aircraft recently inducted in Shaheen Air fleet are grounded because the airline is not allowed to start flights on three new routes, Mr. Sehbai said.

The current aviation policy not only hampers the growth of private airlines, but essentially keeps most foreign carriers away also.

There was never a deal to begin with. Boeing offered to convert the 777s currently on order to 787s. I don't think PIA has responded yet.

I believe PIA should take the offer.

*Lower fuel consumption + lower passenger load (787 holds ~250 passengers, compared to 777s ~380 passengers). This could help PIA on certain routes where passenger demand isn't high enough to fill 777s...places like Oslo, Copenhagen...maybe even New York.

problem is that it'll be difficult and expensive for a small airline like PIA to maintain more than 2 types of aircrafts. An airline like PIA needs a mix of one narrow body and one wide body. Even though Boeing 787 and Airbus A330 make more sense than a 777 for PIA (currently with no direct flights to US), we can't simply replace all the 777's so I think they should keep moving with them. Maintaining a mix of 3 aircrafts will be difficult for them especially considering that 787 is a highly advanced aircraft and needs similar expertise to deal with it.
