you took info from cia.gov (or other source which use CIA info), and they talk about simple roads, not about notorways, this is exact info btw

Highways
total: 532,393 km
paved: 358,833 km
unpaved: 173,560 km (2000)

so you talk about all roads including all forest dirtroads and unpaved paths in villages, this has nothing to do with motorways

btw

this is NOT a motorway, this is a dual carriegeway

this IS a motorway, notice the green sign on the right, it's a worldwide used sign informing about motorway and it's used everywhere in the world

so you guys better prepare some more cradible facts

Really? And how is that "dual carriegeway" different from the "motorway" apart from the absense of the sign and a shoulder?

For your information, the percentage of paved roads (over all roads) in Russia is higher than in US, which is known for its freeways.

In any way John, this is a thread about highways. In Russia they are called "автомагистрали"; and motorways, according to the official definition, are a specific British feature. Brits call them motorways, Russians call them highways - that doesn't change the fact that they all serve the same purpose and allow traffic to go with the same high speed.

Well, I have no idea, but I can try and find the info I'm pretty sure it's a lot.

yes sOmeOne, this might sound ridiculous, but it's exactly the way I posted about those two pics. The first one cannot qualify as a motorway (avtomagistral/autostrada), top speed there is 90km/h and the second one quilify as avtomagistral thus it has a green sign and top speed of 130km/h.

In the first pic you see a road where you can go on foot, drive bicycle, drive horse etc. In the second one you cannot do all this. There are many more requirements but I don't know them all.

Highways:
total: 952,000 km

paved: 752,000 km (including, in addition to about 336,000 km of conventionally paved roads, about 416,000 km of roads, the surfaces of which have been stabilized with gravel or other coarse aggregates, making them trafficable in wet weather)

unpaved: 200,000 km (these roads are made of unstabilized earth and are difficult to negotiate in wet weather) (1998)
Which puts Russia 6th in the world after Japan. Pretty sad considering the sizes of two

it's not credible coth

here is a map (red lines - motorways), if you check entire Russia you see that about 90% of Russian highways are located not further than 100km away from Moscow or its suburbs. So better not post such nonsenses as Russia having 27K km of highways

90% of Russian motorways are seen on this map

part of Germany

The Netherlands

...or even Lithuania

all maps in similar scale

John, please explain, what you are talking about - motorways or highway?
Russia have 27,5 thousands kms of moder highways, where is about 2,5-3 thousands of them is powerful motorways.

Motorways you can found in any suburbs of big cities. German or Netherlands is all one big suburb, while Russia population density is not so big. Russia's highways small in count, but long in distance.

@coth
ouch! just found a picture of M53 "highway" in Siberia which is listed in your post

and by highway I mean motorway=autobahn=autostrada since highway may have a dozen of different meanings. SO basically it's what I said earlier
-4 lanes plus 2 emergency
-two or more level crosings only
-max speed not less than 110 km/h

It is not M53. May be one of branch forest roads.

I can't know this coth, it was taken from a website "Road to beijing" and near the picture it's written "M53 motorway in Siberia", but maybe they're just liars (as that Mapquest perhaps also is)

but ok, here's one more pic by some Assie guys who travelled on M53 on speedbikes

if ain't work, that's the pic link http://www.geocities.com/siberia1994/img0059.jpg

but I'm pretty sure that this is that M53 since I know a guy (my uncle) who travelled around Russia with his car business some years ago, he's been driving everywhere from Moscow up till Chita and further, so basically those pictures illustrate his tellings.

And all I want to say by all this stuff is that the reality is as follows: there are some motorways around Moscow including it's freeway bypasses and suburb access highways but elswhere in Russia the roads are mostly as I posted in the two previous pics, this is the reality coth.

I don't see shot from Yahoo, but I can say - it is 1994 - it was 10 years ago and Russia completely changed since that times.

so you tell in 10 years Russia constructed 27,000+ km of autobahn type highways? doesn't seem very credible. Even physically this is impossible not even talking about financing.
