Guys

I have posted a few google maps with road markings with suggestions for fly over along OMR, which were discussed long back in some of the Govt meetings. The same maps were given to Sridhar when he came to Chennai recently.

I am sorry if some of the roads were not clearly marked for better understanding.

wow - you've worked on every single junction on OMR!!

I only didn't understand what-is-what in the Madhya Kailash Junction.. which is the elevated part? the N-S direction or the E-W direction?

also, if only a single direction is grade-separated, the junction will continue to be largely signalised won't it?

Koyambedu Junction..

Since this project has the added met5o route I came up with this idea insteead of the cloverleaf proposed.

3 lane flyover ( IRR ) wit hmetro runnig in the middle and roads climbing up to hte metro elevation and down. and 3 lane ( underpass ) PHR. The ground level rotary can be 3 lane with the exits 2 lane.

But I already foresee some problems wit hthis model.. I doubt the metro will be able to follow IRR over the Coum river bridge. That would be a structural problem. The metro might need its own brdige across the river. It wil be interesting to see how they propose to take metro across Coum AND the Koyambedu flyover.

I will try give some suggestion for this later..

Thanks Ferrari Fan! Sorry about the lack of info on Madya kailash.

Since MRTS is already finished in N-S direction, the elevated portion will be also N-S parellel to MRTS.

Traffic from Tidel Park:
To go to Mount Road - Go over the Flyover, get down near Kotturpuram station and take the new road along Adyar & new bridge across Adyar to reach Nandanam near YMCA. Another branch may take along Adyar bank and reach Little Mount / Saidapet near Maraimalai Adigal Bridge.

To go to Adyar Malar Hospital - Go over the Flyover, get down the left clover in CLRI and take the ground level road under bridge towards Adyar Bus stand.

To go to Guindy - Take the new road already laid behind Madya Kailash.

To take U Turn - Go along Left service road and turn right and U turn under flyover.

Traffic From Kotturpuram Station:
To go to OMR - Take the Flyover
To go to Guindy - Take the bridge across Buckingham canal and take Old Cancer Hospital Road (Canal Bank Road) and reach SP Road where ever there is a signal. Turn right on SP Road towards Guindy. Alternate is to take Kottur Road and reach Gandhi Mandapam Road.

Traffic from IIT:
To go to OMR - Take the Left Service Road under the flyover and take left turn towards Kotturpuram station and go over a new clover (under MRTS line and across Canal) and climb over and join the flyover with traffic from Kottur side. Gradient and Height may pose problems under MRTS and Railways may not allow the same.

Traffic from Adyar Bus Stand:
To go to OMR - Take the new left service road to be built under the MRTS and join OMR before KB Nagar station.

I understand that Madya Kailash is ready to shift in case suitable alternate site is given. Labour Institute has been very magnanimous. CLRI - doubtful. Rly - Doubtful.

Please improve on this and post.

People from Tidel Park who wants to go to Malar Hospital and beyond may take the fly over and get down near Kotturpuram station and take right turn at the new road along adyar (Gandhi nagar side) and reach Malar Hospital.

Hi Kannan, how effective will be a clover under the MRTS? Do we have enough space horizontally and vertically for that?

@ kannan : thanks for explaining - it looks really good - the only doubt, like Devarajan said is how the clover leaf will be accomodated under/above the MRTS..

if i may suggest, how about a loop parallel to the loop that you have planned, but with greater elevation, so that it loops across the flyover and joins it on the left lane..

something like this..

alternatively, a subway of some sort to take traffic from IIT towards OMR can be looked at..

I have received a personal email questioning how can I suggest costly suggestion, wherein I posted a few days back suggesting cheap solutions.

Please note that these google drawings & suggestions were given to the experts committee 2 years back when OMR was in its infancy. I reproduced the same drawings without any addition freshly, asking for suggestions.

I have seen in Mumbai some loops under the flyover but under railway line, I am not aware of. Safety Issue may derail such ideas.

Traffic Study which was made then lost its relevance now due to the exploding development that is going to take place. If The new road along Adyar is finished, the traffic from IIT side to OMR may reduce a lot. People coming from Nanadanam / Cenotaph Road / Chamiers Road may take a left turn along the new road from Kotturpuram bridge near Adyar House and reach Madya Kailash Jn / Malar Hospital.

How the road along Adyar is going to cross the Kotturpuram bridge is a question.

The Education Dept personnel had given such a solution without adding much expenses. Brainstorming may bring in solutions.

Four-lane system extended till Nandanam

CHENNAI: The four-lane traffic system in vogue on Anna Salai will be extended from the DMS complex (Teynampet) to the Nandanam junction from 7 a.m on Saturday.

Traffic police officials hope the four-lane system would reduce accidents as different types of vehicles will move in demarcated lanes. This avoids a direct contact between heavy vehicles and two-wheelers, said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar.

Last year 108 two-wheeler riders were killed in accidents involving MTC buses, he said.

Talking to The Hindu here on Friday, Mr. Sunil Kumar said the increasing vehicle population was the reason for introducing such methods. The vehicles shall move at a maximum speed of 35 km, a press note said.

A senior official, who introduced the system on a 2.5 km stretch of Anna Salai in 1992-93, said for the system to succeed, lane discipline should be enforced and all vehicles should have a uniform speed limit. Only then the signals could be synchronised.

Extending the system from Teynampet up to Nandanam was welcome as it could further segregate vehicles of different sizes and speed.

However the system required few other pre-requisites: a uniform road width and clear service lane and parking system, with prominent and demarcated space for lane crossing, the officer said.
