Bird flu outbreak creates shiver among Namakkal exporters.

NAMAKKAL

The bird flu outbreak in a turkey unit of the government-run Central Poultry Development Organisation in Bangalore has triggered fear among farmers and exporters in Tamil Nadu that poultry products from across the country will be prevented from entering overseas and domestic markets.

Though poultry farms in the State have not been affected, the fear is that overseas buyers will not be location-specific while banning the products. The experience so far is that instead of banning products only from the affected zone, buyers react by clamping a ban on poultry products from across the country.

Secretary of the Animal Husbandry Department (AHD), Government of India, Gokul Chandra Pati confirmed the outbreak of bird flu in a report he submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) on Friday. He stated that 3,481 turkeys had succumbed to the flu at the farm in the second week of October.

Based on test results from the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory in Bhopal, the department has identified a highly-pathogenic avian influenza virus as the cause of death. The report, however, made it clear that the occurrence was only in a zone or compartment and not the entire country.

Oman banned import of eggs from India earlier this year after bird flu was reported in north India. Poultry farmer and exporter P.V. Senthil said export to Oman resumed about five weeks ago, and so far 55 containers — more than 2.5 crore eggs — had been exported.

Chairman of National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) Namakkal Zone, P. Selvaraj told The Hindu that many countries banned the import of eggs and poultry products when bird flu was reported in a country.

“However, countries such as Afghanistan and Algeria imported eggs from India even when the OIE classified India as bird-flu affected. They were convinced that eggs from Namakkal are safe as we are far away from the affected zones.

“At present, the consumption of eggs is high in Oman and we are hopeful that they will continue importing eggs after testing the quality. If they impose a ban, it will become a problem for the export market.

“Broiler and egg-laying chicken in Karnataka have not been affected by the bird flu. But, the existing situation could become advantageous for the poultry industry in Namakkal. Eggs produced in Mangalore are supplied to northern Kerala and, at times, Chennai. Eggs from Tamil Nadu will be supplied to those centres if there is market resistance to eggs from Karnataka,” Mr. Selvaraj said.

Industry sources said that about 10 to 15 per cent of broilers reared in Tamil Nadu were from Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri, from where chicken is primarily sold in Bangalore. They said that these farms would be affected by the outbreak in Bangalore if there is precautionary consumer resistance to chicken.

“Wholesale egg rate was increased by 5 paise to Rs. 3.15 in Namakkal zone on Saturday to send a positive message to farmers — that they need not fear the bird flu,” NECC sources said.

Bird flu: Kerala bans entry of eggs, chicken from Tamil Nadu.

NAMAKKAL, October 31, 2012

The Kerala Government has banned the entry of eggs and chicken from Tamil Nadu from the wee hours of Tuesday, following bird flu outbreak in Karnataka.

Trucks carrying egg and chicken from Tamil Nadu were stopped at the check post in the border, following which many trucks returned, president of the Tamil Nadu Poultry Farmers’ Association R. Nallathambi told The Hindu.

“Poultry farmers were just recovering from heavy loss incurred due to feed price escalation and this ban imposed by Kerala has come as a big blow”, he said.

Industry sources said that Kerala is the second largest egg consumption centre for eggs produced in Namakkal. It is learnt that everyday close to one crore eggs from Namakkal are consumed in Kerala.

“In addition to eggs, 50,000 to one lakh layer birds, are taken to Kerala for meat. Poultry farmers expressed concern that continuance of the ban for a few more days will result in stagnation of eggs and bring down its price. “Karnataka is closely located to Kerala as far as it is from Tamil Nadu. While consumption of chicken grown in Kerala is not banned, it is unfair to impose a ban on egg and chicken from Tamil Nadu”, they observed.

Chairman of the National Egg Coordination Committee, Namakkal Zone, Dr. P. Selvaraj said that poultry farmers need not panic, as he expressed confidence that the ban will be lifted in a day or two.

“NECC Chairman, Chennai Zone, Mohan Reddy met the Secretary of the Animal Husbandry Department (AHD), Government of Tamil Nadu, and explained the issue on Tuesday. The Secretary made a written representation to his counterpart in Kerala.

The AHD in Kerala is holding a meeting in connection with this issue on Wednesday and we hope that the ban could be lifted.

“While countries to which we export eggs have not banned eggs from India, we still fear that it could happen”, Dr. Selvaraj added.

Namakkal district gets mobile court.

The Chief Justice, M.Y. Eqbal , on Tuesday flagged off 10 mobile courts for use in Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Namakkal, Salem, Erode, Dindigul and Tirunelveli districts, pursuant to a G.O. of August 4, 2010. The courts will be presided over by a Civil Judge.

Following the constitution of the courts, the Madras High Court on Monday issued a notification posting Judicial Magistrates to the courts.

Though there were two mobile courts in Chennai, such a facility was not available in other parts of the State. The Chief Justice was particular that the litigants in rural areas also deserved to be redressed their grievances expeditiously at low cost. Hence, he addressed the government for procurement of vehicles and the government, realising the need for such courts, issued the order.

The vehicle had been modified in such a way that a judicial officer would hold court and hear and dispose of cases. The mobile courts are equipped to receive applications relating to traffic and petty offences, grant bail and remand accused to custody, issue summons, receive police reports, pass sentences and commit convicts to prison. They would also deliver certified copies of its orders.

Kerala to lift ban on eggs, chicken from T. N. soon.

NAMAKKAL, November 3, 2012

Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy has assured a delegation of Livestock and Agri Farmers Trade Association (LIFT) that his government would shortly lift ban on eggs, chicken and other poultry by-products from Tamil Nadu, according to P.V. Senthil, LIFT general secretary

Ban on poultry products

The Kerala government imposed the ban on poultry products from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu following reports of bird flu in a turkey farm in Bangalore.

After meeting the Chief Minister in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday, Dr. Senthil told The Hindu that “we have pointed out to him that Namakkal continued to export eggs to Oman, Bahrain, Afghanistan and countries in West Africa even after the bird flu outbreak was confirmed in India. This shows that eggs here are safe for consumption and that the Government of Kerala can be confident that it will not affect consumers of that State,” Dr. Senthil said, adding that as per the guidelines of the World Organisation for Animal Health, only products from farms located within three-km radius of the bird flu-affected area should not be sold. The delegation was led by honorary president of LIFT Mohan Kumaramangalam.

Plea for creation of Kumarapalayam Taluk.

Revenue Department officers association has asked for bifurcation of Tiruchengode Taluk and creation of Kumarapalayam Taluk.

I think Kumarapalayam is the third biggest town in Namakkal district after Namakkal and Tiruchengode. It definitively deserves to be a Taluk . Even during erstwhile Combined Salem District or in newer Namakkal District , Kumarapalayam lacks many facilities due to it not being a taluk head quarters. I hope our Industries minister who is from this constituency will takes steps to creation of a new taluk.

Elisa Reader installed in Namakkal GH.

Two Elisa Readers worth Rs. 6 lakh were installed at the Government District Head Quarters Hospital in Namakkal by Collector D. Jagannathan on Monday.

Earlier the samples collected from suspected dengue patients in Namakkal district were sent to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital in Salem. At times it even took three days to get the result. With the installation of Elisa Readers in the Government District Head Quarters Hospital, it will be easier to test the samples and get the result, Mr Jagannathan said.

He said that early detection of dengue will play a key role in sanitising the villages of the patients to prevent the spread of the fever. The Collector said that a total 300 mazdoors have been appointed all over the district to create awareness on dengue.

Deputy Director of Health Services Dr. M. Jemini told The Hindu that close to 350 samples have been collected from dengue suspects in Namakkal district from June 2012.

Kerala egg ban spells trouble for poultry industry in Karnataka

If the Kerala government does not lift the ban on transportation of eggs from Karnataka within a couple of days, poultry farmers here will be doomed as Mysore zone is the largest supplier of eggs to Kerala.

Following reports of bird flu at Hesarghatta in Bangalore, Kerala government, which is the largest buyer of eggs from the state, acted swiftly and imposed a ban on eggs not only from Karnataka, but also from the neighbouring state Tamil Nadu.

While Mysore supplies 12 lakh eggs every day, it is 1.10 crore eggs from Tamil Nadu.
When contacted, M P Satish Babu, Mysore Zonal chairman of National Egg Coordinating Committee, said the underlying fact is that the dip in sales of chicken and prices is not the real problem faced by the committee.

“The actual problem will arise if the ban on eggs is not lifted in a few days. It may cause extensive damage to poultry breeders and farmers as there will be a sharp decline in egg prices, which would become a great task for the NECC to tackle. It might also affect farmers who supply byproducts to make poultry feeds.

Satish Babu, who is in Tiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is holding several rounds of meeting with the Kerala animal husbandry minister, said his team was trying to explain that there is no fear of spread of bird flu and convince the ministry to lift the ban. However, the officials in Kerala seem to be adamant in their stand and are fearing that the eggs may trigger bird flu attack in their state.

The Kerala government has banned eggs from Namakkal, Tamil Nadu as they fear the eggs from Karnataka may enter Kerala through TN.

Explaining further, he said about 12 lakh eggs are sent every day from Mysore alone to Kerala. There are more than 62 poultry farms in Mysore district alone and the eggs supplied to the city is negligible as a majority of them are transported to Kerala.

Kerala needs approximately about 1.25 crore eggs every day and Namakkal in Tamil Nadu is another state which supplies a majority of their needs amounting to more than 1.10 crore eggs every day.

According to a survey, while people in the rest of the country consume 53 eggs per person every month on an average, a Keralite is said to consume 135 eggs. Their need for eggs is more as a majority of them are non-vegetarians. The poultry egg production in Kerala is very negligible as they are capable of supplying only 60,000 eggs per day.

The farmers, who are involved in manufacturing poultry feeds using byproducts from sunflower, groundnuts, rice bran, limestone and soya hindi are keeping their fingers crossed, hoping that the Kerala government will respond positively.

However, the officials there have assured to extend their cooperation and have convened further meetings on Saturday too.

Freight service begins on Salem-Karur sector

Regular freight service on the newly laid Salem-Karur broad-gauge railway line via Namakkal began on Thursday. The passenger service is expected to commence by January 2013.

Salem Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Sujatha Jayaraj flagged off the cement-laden train that was from Andhra Pradesh to Tirunelveli, via Karur. The DRM said that the new route would reduce travelling time between Salem and Karur by an hour as currently trains from Salem had to reach Erode and then to Karur covering an additional distance of 40 km.

About the commencement of passenger service, she said that after inspection and approval by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, the passenger service would begin.

She along with Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM) V. Thavamani Pandi, engineers and other senior railway officials travelled in the goods train from Salem to Karur and held discussions with officials. Senior officials said that the viability of freight earnings was also good in the sector due to the presence of industries along the stretch.

The project, initially began in 1997 at an estimated cost of Rs. 225 crore to lay tracks for 85 km, between Salem and Karur via Namakkal ran into rough weathers due to problems in land acquisitions and inadequate allotment of funds in railway budgets. Later, the project cost was revised to Rs. 630 crore and work was speeded up and track laying work was completed a year ago. Construction of railway stations, over-bridges and installing telecommunication signals and providing basic amenities to passengers at stations were the remaining works that were completed in the past one year.

Trail run of train engine was carried out in February and problems on tracks were rectified by railway workers. Hence in a prelude to commence passenger traffic, freight service began on Thursday.

Freight service begins on new BG track connecting Karur, Namakkal, Salem

With the first goods train serenely and safely riding on the new broad gauge track connecting Karur, Namakkal, and Salem districts, the long kept dream of the people of these districts finally arrived on Thursday.

The goods train, aptly carrying more than 5,120 tonnes rice, was proceeding from Padugapadu in Andhra Pradesh to Tirunelveli. Salem Divisional Railway Manager Sujatha Jayaraj flagged off the goods train at Salem Junction at around 10.50 hrs in the presence of Divisional Operations Manager Vijayabala and Senior Divisional Engineer Nirala. On board the goods train were Additional DRM Thavamani Pandiyan and few other officials.

The train with 58 wagons proceeded from Salem to Karur via Namakkal on the newly-laid track at a princely pace of 30 kmph and took almost three hours to travel the 95 km stretch.

This being the first full fledged train service being operated on the newly laid track, enthusiastic crowds gathered in villages en route especially at Vangal and Vennamalai neighbourhoods in Karur district to see the train pass through their area. “We are definitely delighted as we see light at the end of the tunnel. There is now hope that passenger services can commence at the earliest and the railway officials could put in that bit of effort to get us that Pongal gift,’’ points out a retired State government official Balasubramanian of Karur.

The project started in 1997 at an outlay of Rs.225 crore, . has now been completed at an revised estimate of Rs.630 crore. The new track will reduce distance between Karur and Salem by 30 km besides shrinking travel time by one hour, according to Mr.Thavamani Pandiyan.

Goods train services would continue to be operated on the new track and the Chief Administrative Officer, Southern Railway, was clearing things to pave the way for the mandatory inspection of the track by the Commissioner of Rail Safety perhaps in December. Operation of passenger services would have to wait till CRS’ green signal, he indicated.

“We are happy now though it took us a long struggle to bring the train from Salem to Karur via Namakkal. The Salem Division officials must be lauded for the effort and we urge them to continue the good work and ensure that the passenger train services commence by January,” says the president of the Karur District Train Travellers’ Welfare Association, S. Annadurai.

Poultry industry to benefit from new goods train

NAMAKKAL, November 17, 2012

The first goods train that passed through Namakkal on Thursday has brought smiles on the faces and hope for poultry farmers as they will be most benefited by the freight service on the Salem to Karur route – via Namakkal.

“A train with 58 wagons carried about 5,100 tonnes of grains crossed Namakkal on Thursday. Poultry farms here need such a train to meet feed requirements of the industry in the district,” said chairman of the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) Namakkal Zone P. Selvaraj.

He said that poultry farms in this district needed about 5,000 tonnes of feed everyday for the nearly 4.25 crore hens and one crore chicken. More than 2,500 tonnes of feed materials – 50 per cent – was being brought from other states using trucks at a freight charge that was higher than what it would cost to transport them using trains.

We bring about 1,250 tonnes of soy bean meal and protein cakes from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat using trucks. An equal quantity of maize is being brought from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh while fish is being brought from Mangalore, Gujarat, and Tuticorin,” he said.

The expenditure was likely to come down by about Rs. 500 a tonne to Rs. 700 a tonne on feeds. It would help the industry save Rs. 7.5 lakh a day. Farmers could save Rs. 100 a tonne for materials brought from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

The train would make it easier to transport eggs to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and North Eastern states.

“Truck strikes will not affect us anymore,” Mr. Selvaraj said.

Last Updated: 20-Nov-2012 11:47

With the formal inauguration of its Juvenile Justice Board (JJB), Namakkal’s long wait for a legal agency to hear cases against children under 18 years of age ended on Monday. It took almost 15 years for the district to get the JJB, which had been functioning only in Salem from which Namakkal was carved out.

N Velu, PDJ, inaugurated the JJB in the presence of the head of the board and principal magistrate K R Jothi at a function held here on Monday. Addressing the function, Velu said that the police should produce children who were under 18 years and were booked in any case before the JJB. “The cops must adhere to the norms related to treatment of such children,” he stressed.

Two social workers - Thillai Sivakumar and C Bharathi - were nominated as members of the JJB. M Selvam, district child protection officer and probation officer, said that efforts would be made to bring documents related to the cases now under trial at the Salem JJB to Namakkal.

A trip to Kolli hills to be more soothing.

NAMAKKAL, November 25, 2012

Many tourists from across Tamil Nadu and other states who wish to enjoy the natural beauty of the waterfalls, boat house and other places of interest atop Kolli Hills – promoted as an eco tourism destination by the Tamil Nadu Government – will soon be able to make a more comfortable journey to the top of the hill.

Flow of tourists to Kolli Hills is very less, as one has to cross 70 hairpin bends to cover a distance of 20 km between Kalappanaickenpatti and Solakadu to reach the Semmedu Bus Stand atop the hill.

“The number of bends cannot be reduced, but we will be establishing a couple of spots where the weary tourists can take a break before they reach the top”, District Collector D. Jagannathan told The Hindu .

He said that Rs. 40 lakh has been allotted from the Environment Development Fund of the State Government, of which 60 per cent (Rs. 24 lakh) has been set aside for the construction of buildings and 40 per cent (Rs. 16 lakh) for plantation of trees in those places in the forest area where there are not many trees.

Two cafeterias and resting places will be set up with the Rs. 24 lakh – at Rs. 12 lakh each.

A cafeteria, resting place and separate toilets for men and women will be built in each of the two bends – the first between the first 30 hairpin bends and the next between the 31st and 60 th hairpin bends.

The process of identifying the bend where they can be established is underway in full swing as there is need for adequate water to maintain the toilets clean,” he noted.

Mr. Jagannathan said that the cafeteria will be manned by members of Tribal Self Help Group, wherein they will sell edible products such as fruits and honey from the hill in addition to tea, coffee and something hot to munch as they relax on the way. A resolution to construct the buildings on the hairpin bends was recently passed at the Kolli Hills Panchayat Union meeting.

“The route to reach atop the hill comprises the poromboke lands, as well as areas under the control of the Forest Department. We are trying our best to identify the bends for the construction of buildings within the government poromboke area. We will get permission from the Forest Department if water availability and the suitable area for establishing the cafeteria lies within their limit”, the Collector added
