Thirded. It's not like this was a last-minute plan either. It was drawn up months and years ago (SOME of it, not the protest zones and what not that was hashed out in the spring).

Downtown Tampa has shortcomings, we know this. But the staging wasn't accurately planne dby Tampa itself. The RNC was tied to it intimately for more than a year.

It's not as if there was a big difference with the DNC in Charlotte where occupy protesters were kept well away from the convention and security measures frustrated everybody:

These frustrating and disruptive security measures are endemic to any political convention. Candidates from BOTH parties are given Secret Service protection and no convention planner wants to risk the bad optics of another Chicago 1968. The London Olympics are another example of this: people fled town due to all the disruption and sales figures from that period showed a decline, when the organizers had promised gains.

Cities simply have to think long and hard whether it's worth it to hold these charged events. Already fewer cities are stepping forward to host the WTO. My hope for Tampa is that the people who came in remember how awesome the city is and return many times after the memory of this convention fades.
