Thu Thiem TUNNEL

I just read that they will empty the water in Ben Nghe canal to dig the thu thiem tunnel...............and will demolish the 2 khanh Hoi and Cammette bridge.
I looked up the saigon map I don't see any bridge name "khanh hoi" where is that?
I thought they dug the tunnel in front of the saigon stock exchange building....like in juroslaw previous photos.....the tunnel is only 6 lanes there's enough space to dig it on the ground.....why go down the canal?

if possible could someone take photo of this massive construction? thanks!

I used to think the first bridge nearest to the ben nha rong is the khanh hoi bridge but the map said "nguyen Tat thanh" so I'm confused

any knows? answer me now or answer me never..........

Nguyen Tat Thanh is the street name, and I think Khanh Hoi is the bridge's.

Anyway, the massive construction is now a huge mess, nothing interresting to visit....

moonsoon mess or not it's historical
once everything are finished and done, you won't ever get the chance to take photos like these anymore.
I'm very much interested in seeing the saigon notre dame cathedral underconstruction, but now we got no photos of that.
so the point is please take pictures

the newspaper said not only they demolish khanhhoi and camette bridge but all of the old bridges including the "Y" bridge, to build 8 new bridges.......I'm not really sure what the 8 new bridges will be like, but I'm sure it's very modern.....ya can't kiss or commit suicidal on modern bridge..........that's a scientific fact

oh thanks LS, I read and type very fast, sometimes I miss a lot of things.

correction, 8 bridges are replacements of the old bridges.
in total there will be 24 new bridges on the entire canal.

but I don't like tunnel, I preffer bridge, atleast it's a vissible structure, who could see a tunnel? and bridge is much cheaper, you only use power to generate light for haft a day or 12hr.
with tunnel, lights will be on 24/7, not only that, more power have to generate for air filtration, fan, cameras, securities.

THU THIEM TUNNEL

THU THIEM TUNNEL

Thu Thiem Tunnel uses advanced technology

(14-02-2005)

HCM CITY ? New and advanced technology will be used to build the Thu Thiem Tunnel crossing Sai Gon River, one of the major works of the 21.9km Saigon East-West Highway Project.

The 1,490m underwater Thu Thiem Tunnel is the project’s most ambitious feature, according to Dr Le Qua, ex-vice director of the Sai Gon East-West Highway Project Management Board.

Qua said the immersed tunnel comprises four sections, each 98m long, 23.3m wide and 9m high.

The sections, to be made at a construction site in Nhon Trach District of Dong Nai Province will be made of reinforced concrete 1 to 1.2m thick.

While the tunnel sections are built, contractors will dig into the ground, 13 to 14m under the river bed.

The prefabricated parts will be carried by ferries to the construction site on the Sai Gon River. Contractors will then seal each tunnel section at both sides before placing them in the tunnel dug under the river.

Qua said joining the sections of tunnel together would be time-consuming.

Construction of the immersed tunnel also includes two approach roads of nearly 1km long at each of the two mouths of the tunnel.

According to figures from the project management board, the tunnel could carry from 29,000 to 30,000 vehicles each day, though bicycles will be prohibited in the tunnel.

Qua said the tunnel will be furnished with equipment for lighting, ventinlation, fire prevention and firefighting, a traffic jam warning system, pollution measurement and counting vehicles.

He added that construction of the tunnel could begin more than one month after the ground-breaking ceremony, when the site is clear and traffic circulation is reorganised.

Japan’s Obayashi Corporation was awarded the contract for construction of the Thu Thiem Tunnel and the new Thu Thiem Road, at a total cost of VND2,085 billion (US$132 million). ? VNS

this is not a very good project.
i just read on the newspaper, a bridge building cost only 50% as compare to the tunnel.
by approved this tunnel project the people have to pay more taxes. (and the government can......well you know the rest) that's why you don't see any asian metropolis attempt to do this.....except for shanghai......because shanghai is big and like they say shanghai is an image china wants to put out to represent the country.....that's why shanghai builds to impress.
saigon needs modern pleasing-to-the-eye bridges that light up at night.....not a tunnel under the river.......hopefully there won't be any sidewalk or else there will be a lot of homeless, prostitutes and criminals down there

I don't like tunnels either. However, building a bridge would require more space on either side leading up to the bridge (as it would have to be higher to accomodate shipping.

A tunnel would improve the city cosmetically and would also be good for those who wishes to commit suicide by jumping off it.

yes, I agree with Bang. A nice attractive bridge will be a much better investment, hence creates an attraction for Saigon.

Saigon needs rational people when designing their already corrupted city. They need people who think of the pros vs. the cons, not impatient people who wants to rush things just b/c they think they’ve created the next big thing for Saigon.
