Sultan Ismail Hospital
Johor Bahru : 2004

http://www.gdparchitects.com/projects/category/hospital/sultan-ismail.html

WARMTH IN TECHNOLOGY. The Sultan Ismail Hospital was commissioned to supplement the existing Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bharu. As an electronically managed specialist centre, effort was put into the coordination of design with the information system (THIS) employed to achieve its ends. With the other facilities including radiotherapy and oncology, haematology, mammography and burns care units, the design imaged on healthcare as raised to a technological level which was state-of-the-art without losing the most basic of human needs: that of natural daylight and the well being that comes from “dwelling”.

The hospital with its 704 beds is organized around a great courtyard, a garden of commensurate proportion. The entry atrium and plaza with their associated lobbies, assembly and waiting areas all connect at the arrival level to this forested garden. Circulation has been kept clean and clear on the edges of the garden with vertical travel by lift or stairs designed to maximize security and minimize public movement at the upper levels. With a structural grid of 7.5 meters, construction modularity and systemized components from external façade & details to the internal finishes and fittings are prioritized so as to effect greater balance between repetition and customization. The hospital has been designed to be technologically advanced, yet mindful of lessons from vernacular architecture. Friendly and warm at the same time, it is practical & efficient, and environmentally responsive while providing ambient comfort appropriate to a health care facility.

"For the moment, we have no information on its cost because the structural plan had not been released. So, the actual allocation cannot be announced. http://www.utusan.com.my/utusan/info.asp?y=2011&dt=0411&pub=Utusan_Malaysia&sec=Terkini&pg=bt_35.htm

– Bernama

KPJ to build specialist centre in Iskandar
By Syed Umar Ariff Published: 2011/06/17
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BTIMES/articles/pijey/Article/

JOHOR BARU: A new specialist hospital on a 500,000 sq ft of land will be built in Bandar Dato' Onn in the Iskandar Malaysia development region in Johor Baru.

Specialist hospital operator KPJ Healthcare Bhd will collaborate with Johor Land Bhd to build the modern hospital.

The project will be undertaken in two phases, KPJ chairman Kamaruzzaman Abu Kassim said yesterday.

The hospital will have the capacity of 400 beds, encompassing 280,000 sq ft. The first phase of the construction with 150 beds, is expected to start by the end of 2012.

Its total invesment has yet to be determined, but an average of RM1,000 is budgeted for a bed.

"Approval for zoning has been obtained from the Health Ministry and the details are being finalised," Kamaruzzaman said.

Kamaruzzaman, who is also Johor Corp chief executive and president, said the new hospital will house a "Centres of Excellence" featuring a heart centre, a geriatric centre, cancer centre and a cosmetic and reconstructive centre, among others.

"It will serve as a one-stop centre for all medical services of the highest standards to cater to both local and foreign patients to promote health tourism," he told a press conference yesterday.

At the same time, the group is currently developing new specialist hospitals in Bandar Baru Klang, Muar, Pasir Gudang and Kuantan.

KPJ is investing between RM50 million and RM80 million for each hospital.

It recently completed a deal to buy Sibu Specialist Medical Centre and Sibu Geriatric Health and Nursing Centre in Sarawak at RM28 million on April 6.

Kamaruzzaman expected the new project in Bandar Dato' Onn to further sustain its consistent financial growth in the coming years.

For the year ended December 31 last year, KPJ posted a total revenue of RM1.65 billion, up 13 per cent, compared with RM1.46 billion previously.

Group pre-tax profit improved16 per cent from RM143.89 million to RM166.69 million.

On another note, KPJ is venturing into the retirement and aged care market following its agreement to buy 51 per cent interest in Australian operator Jeta Gardens Waterford Trust for RM19 million.

The deal is expected to be completed by September this year.

"There is a huge market for retirement and aged care. We are in the midst of studying the business and is planning to build several retirement villas around the country," Kamaruzzaman said.

Mahkota Medical Centre to expand
By Vasantha Ganesan Published: 2011/06/20
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BTIMES/articles/imahmc/Article/

KUALA LUMPUR: Mahkota Medical Group, a unit of Singapore-listed Health Management International Ltd (HMI), will spend between RM250 million and RM300 million to expand the Mahkota Medical Centre in Malacca.

The medical centre, which is now a 280-bed facility, wants to add another 220 beds. The expansion is expected to be ready by end-2014.

"We are in midst of planning and should start development in mid-2012," chief executive officer Timothy Chang said, adding that it has 1.22ha of undeveloped land located next to the hospital and across the road from the hospital.

"We are targeting to have a total of 500 beds," Chang told Business Times in a phone interview.

Chang said the 500-bed capacity will be able to cater for the needs of the hospital for between 10 and 15 years.

The investment will include equipment.

Currently, the average occupancy at the hospital is around 65 per cent. It is fully occupied during the peak months of medical tourism.

Mahkota Medical is centrally located within the Malacca city and now has some 40 clinics. As it expands, it hopes to have 100 clinics and to handle more complex cases.

The hospital aims to establish itself as a one-stop medical centre with centres on sub-specialties. The population in Malacca alone will not be able to support the hospital.

Accordingly, it is eyeing patients from Negri Sembilan and the northern part of Johor.

Chang, meanwhile, expects the return on investment (ROI) on the new wing to take half the time that a new hospital will normally take. New hospitals, generally, take eight to 10 years to recover their ROI.

However, the Mahkota Medical Centre expects to see ROI within five years as it is already an established hospital.

Moreover, since the opening up of its beds will be done in stages, some of the space may be temporarily used as lodging for relatives accompanying the foreign patients.

Mahkota Medical Centre started operations in 1994 under the Lion Group.

Lion, which restructured and sold its non-core businesses during the 1997/98 financial crisis, sold the hospital in September 2001.

Mahkota Medical Group is 48.95 per cent owned by HMI, while Bumiputera group Maju Medik Sdn Bhd holds 38.42 per cent and 12.36 per cent is held by doctors located all over Malaysia.
