But here in Asia it is different as the city-centre is more vibrant compared to the suburbs. Yes I live in the suburbs. But I work and spend my time in the city. Detroit is highly depended on the automobile industry and when the industry crashed, so did the city. Another reason is "white flight" in which many of it's caucasian population has moved to the suburbs. But again, this is also the same with Johannesburg in South Africa. Anyway, there are many US cities that have vibrant city centres. This include New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington DC, Boston, San Antonio and the "sin cities" of Las Vegas and Reno.

Real estate in huge swaths of the United States is dirt cheap. It partly explains why places like North Carolina and Texas attract so many people. You can buy a lot of house in places like that.

I love the city. I grew up in a rural area. After moving to Taipei in 2006, I had shock from all the people. Once the shock wore off, I was addicted to city life. I don't think I can ever go back. Sometimes noise bothers me, but I can live with it. Everytime I go to my home town, I am appaled at how people drive everywhere. It just seems so lame to do so.

Asian city centres tend to be more vibrant.

I definitely prefer city life, hence why I want to move to Manhattan; and for other reasons as well.

Somwhere between. Suburbias are like a spreading cancer. They are cosy to live in as long as you don't need to move outwards.

I prefer the city life as well but rather be living in suburbia.
Beside the city is only 30 to 40 minutes drive from our place or 30 mins but train.

I'm a big fan of suburbia. I think apartment living has its place - in the city centre. But as I have said before on other threads they are never ideal for raising a family which is where suburbia comes in.

I'd much rather be living in the middle of a major city. It's much more lively than suburbia.

A major city - but when raising a family maybe some quitness would be good but as in European or Japanese suburbia in a major metropolitan region which is still somehow "urban" - for the most part you have the possibility of public transportation and high streets with shops never tend to be too far away in walking distance.

Depend of how big city is? In very big cities like New York, suburbia is suburbia and there is annoyingly, but in smalest cities circa 500.000-1.000.000 population, suburbs doesnt really exists and there is not annoyingly and from suburbs can go to walk to downtown in 30 min, and it is cool.

We can still experience the big city life despite living in the suburbs. Especially if the travel distance isn't that long.

It depends. In Rio de Janeiro suburbia generally are violent and poor areas of the city. At the same time, there are regions 35km away of the city center which is the center to a lot of industries (television, entertainment, sports) and main services of the metropolis (like luxury goods and restaurants)...

I live in suburbs but it only takes:
- 15 to 20 minutes to reach city center - 15 to 20 minutes to the international airport - 45 mins to 1 hour going to the countryside (mountains, beaches, lakes etc..) |

I think I'll shoot myself If I had to live in those American suburbias where u need a car to go to the store and the only thing to do is to go to the shopping mall to see yet more walmart, targets, jc penneys and macy's.
I remember being in San Diego and thinking, oh my God how do I get outta here!!! you need a car to go ANYWHERE!!! I mean it's ridiculous! |
