This is why Bahrain is different

Battle for soil
Arad Fort protesters refuse to raise white flag
Alexander M Arrackal
Staff Reporter

A battle to gain control of the soil is now brewing in Arad with protestors claiming it was a war against commercial exploitation of the area around the Arad fort. Abdul Amer Jaffer Al Aradi, the Executive Secretary of the committee said this would continue till the 13,100 square metres of land near the Fort, which they claim was grabbed by the Muharraq Club for construction of a commercial complex would be returned to the Muhurraq Municipal Council and the Ministry of Municipality Affairs and Agriculture. The land was assigned by the Royal Court for the use of the Muharraq Municipal Council, through the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture.”
He said the people of the area still remember the stand taken by Muharraq Municipal Council on October 9, 2007 – of deciding to take over the land and restore it to the original status. Their voice rings even now in our ears and we hope they do not change their stand.
He added, “We are in the final stages of preparing the case against Al Muharraq Club and the land registration office in Muharraq, for the illegal methods used in registering the land. “
Returning of the land to the residents is in public interest, he added. It’s a unique location, close to the Arad Fort – a monument that Bahrain’s Culture and Heritage Department has earmarked for protection and for UNESCO listing. UNESCO listing can only happen without the mall. If there is a mall, then the movements and changes in logistics will not qualify for a listing, he added.
The council and its members had said that the BD19 million mall project of the club had not been approved, though they did attend the signing function.
Isa Sayyar, one of the frontrunners in the committee, told Tribune that it is now time for the authorities in heritage protection to speak out. It is clear that the Fort area cannot be used for the mall project.
“We are to prepare a final report which will include all the illegal arrangements of the President of Muharraq Municipal Council taken to help in registering the land and the pressure being put on the members of the Council and on us. We will submit the file to Human Rights Watch.”
“We are being pressurized to soften our stand and take up the white flag. We will not do it. I am also in consultation with MPs to ensure that this issue is taken up in Parliament.”
They said that the members of the Council were being coaxed to soften their stand on the issue and ensure that the go-ahead is given for the project.
The Committee for the Protection of Arad Fort held its customary Friday protest yesterday.

Protest over BD22m mall

Residents of areas in Arad and Hidd, near the Muharraq Club, yesterday continued their weekly protest against the construction of a proposed BD22 million mall near the club, saying it will be a threat to the "beauty" and "serenity" of the area.

They gathered waving banners and raised slogans against the proposed project, saying it had been given the go-ahead despite their protests.

Residents are also going to court in a bid to halt work after a ground-breaking ceremony went ahead last week.

The people of the area have been protesting since October last year against the mall, being built on land previously owned by the Royal Court.

They claim the acquisition of the land by the Muharraq Club was illegal and that it will spoil the area, earmarked for a new walkway.

BD23m mall for Arad

A shopping mall is to be built at the Muharraq Club headquarters in Arad.

His Majesty King Hamad yesterday received club board members, led by chairman Shaikh Ahmed bin Ali Al Khalifa who outlined plans. Malls for Real Estate Development board members also attended the meeting at Safriya Palace.

The BD23 million investment has been designed to harmonise with Arad Fort's architecture and will include shops and facilities, a parking lot and provide services for users of the seafront Arad walkway.

The King congratulated the club, hailing the private sector to embark on such projects to boost development and create opportunities for job-seekers.

"Such projects are an added value to Bahrain's developed infrastructure and economic and investment momentum," he said.

He also hailed Bahrain's success in earning the confidence of leading investment companies.

Present were Royal Court Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, General Organisation for Youth and Sports President Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, His Majesty's Adviser for Youth and Sports and the Muharraq Governor.
