München - Einkaufszentren

Hello!

I'm going to München next week.

Which are the best shopping centers in München?

Thanks for answer.

The Viktualien Markt has good food drink etc. the main shopping area is around the Rathaus - most expensive shops are behind it.

Wish I was there now

You'll find a wide range of shopping possibilities in Munich, that's for sure! Here are the IMHO most important ones (although not complete, of course):

The OEZ mall (underground: Olympia-Einkaufszentrum) is quite large and good but most of the shops can be found in the centre as well (Spanish men's fashion chain "Springfied" is for me the only reason to go there).

In the centre (more or less):
- Between the main station and Stachus: Kaufhof (formerly "Hertie") is the largest department store.
- Kaufinger Straße/Neuhauser Straße (Stachus to Rathaus/Marienplatz) and Marienplatz: lots of chains and department stores, the main shopping area (pedestrian precinct). Don't miss Ludwig Beck (luxury department store). "Augustiner Bierhalle" is Munichs largest beer hall (and has the best beer, too).
- Sendlinger Straße (southwest of Marienplatz): Smaller stores, some quite good (Konen for fashion, Kare for kitschy decoration, Sport Scheck and Sport Schuster, Munichs traditional supply for mountain sport equipment).
- Tal and Platzl (east of Marienplatz): souvenirs, furniture, etc., "Schneiderweiße" and Hofbräuhaus are two traditional Bavarian restaurants/beer halls.
- Viktualienmarkt (south of Tal, right behind the old town hall): Food, drinks, etc. the heart of Munichs supply and a must see for its atmosphere. Good for a break or lunch!
- Theatinerstraße and Residenzstraße (from Marienplatz to Odeonsplatz, left-respectively righthandside of the Rathaus): A bit more luxurious. Don't miss Dallmayr (stunning classic delicacy store with classic architecture) and the "Fünf Höfe" shopping centre (modern architecture; especially the Hugendubl book store). Around the corner (north of the Fünf Höfe to the west) is Loden Frey located, famous for classical Bavarian clothing ("Tracht") and luxury brands.
- Maximiliansstraße (Odeonsplatz to the Bavarian Parliament): the most expensive side, all world famous luxury brands run flagship stores there.
- Schwabing: Munichs university quarter with the Ludwigsstraße as the main road offers smaller shops and department stores and its worth a walk for its atmosphere.

Except Schwabing and the OEZ (which can be reached by underground) everything is quite close to the Marienplatz/Rathaus so that you easily can walk there (actually, for most of it the only option).
Btw., the tourism section of Munich's website offers lots of information about shopping, too.
