Of course there are, how do you suppose people travel between cities by car/bus?

Nice pics, thanks! I'd also like to see pics of highways (or any other road) outside cities.

Outside the city there are these

I'm not entirely sure what you people expected to see. The only difference between these roads and highways in other countries is that there are no signs and no lines on them.

@sOmeOne

by highway I mean a road of minimum 2+2 driving lanes (2 to each side plus emergency lane in each side), with no one-level crossings, and some physical separation between both directions (like special fence or green area), maximum speed of 110-130km/h, also it's not allowed to walk, drive bcycles and drive slower than 40km/h. It's also called motorway or autobahn in Germany. Afaik there are no such roads in Russia, or there are very few, perhaps somewhere around Moscow to its suburb towns. But if I'm mistaken you may correct me.

they usually got those or similar looking signs

These don't look like they have 2+2 lanes and an emergency shoulder?

Usually highways that go both ways are separated by a patch of trees in the middle.

/\ these are the highways around Sverdlovsk and Ural Mountains areas. Don't think you ever heard about those tho.

@sOmeOne

actually they don't look like real highways, these are dual carriegeways if you look closely, they've got 2+2 lanes but don't have emergancy lane (it also has to be asphalted), only the first pic looks like it has those lanes. And I bet the speed limit there is not higher than 90-100km/h.

They even have roads in areas like this:

This is the "Pamirskaya Avtostrada" - the "silk road to China".

Oh please John, who are you trying to fool? I've been driving highways for the past 2.5 years that I live in US - I KNOW WHAT A HIGHWAY IS. Not a whole lot of highways here even have emergency shoulders, let alone asphalted ones.

Here's the infamous I-5 (Interstate 5) highway going through Washington State - I use it several times a week to go downtown and back. No emergency shoulders were ever observed here. If you have an emergency you either pull over on the grass or you take the exit.

Actually there is a tiny line there next to the concrete that you could probably squeeze a really small car into, but you won't be able to get out, especially during rush hour.

i think this roads are called ring roads. they connect city suburbs with centre etc via high speed roads. I think John is right.

Yes, because you live in US
In US they even call a 1+1 simple road a highway, so if to be completely clear may I ask you. How many motorways are there in Russia which have:
- asphalted emergency lanes
- have no one level crossings
- have maximum speed limit of 130 km/h (or at least 110km/h)

- have this road sign ?

and since I've been driving (or being driven) motorways for my whole life so I really do know what it is.
