INCHEON | Incheon International Airport | Development News
Hello,
I 've seen quite a lot of images of Incheon airport as it is over at "Airports" in the World Forums, and I've seen images of what it should look like when it is finally complete with all phases of expansion done. But, I have no idea about what the current expansion is about or what it will add. So, if anyone has images or infos, it would be much appreciated! |

From IIAC Newsletter - Volume 65
The Best Part First
New Concourse Construction Unveiled The new concourse, the centerpiece of the ongoing second phase construction at Incheon International Airport, finally revealed its outlines last Sept. 28th, in a ceremony to raise the main structure attended by over 300 notables including: Korea’s minister of Construction and Transportation Mr. Byung-jik Choo, members of the Construction and Transportation Committee of the National Assembly, and ranking officials and personnel from airports and related fields. The new concourse is a mammoth complex 918 meters long and 34 meters high, comprising two underground floors and five above ground, and covering 41 acres. The concourse will have sufficient size to allow 30 aircraft to dock simultaneously, including the Airbus 380, expected to be the largest aircraft in the market for years to come. With the new concourse, passenger traffic at IIAC will increase from the present 30 million to 44 million per year. An all-automatic intra airport transit system will connect the new concourse to the existing one, allowing swift movement of passengers once they have completed checking in. In addition, the new lounge as well as commercial and convenience facilities, arranged and designed in a way that sets them apart from other airports, will mean an exponential increase in traveler satisfaction. At the ceremony, Jaehee Lee, President & CEO of IIAC stated that the second- phase construction was undertaken to meet increasing demand for international travel due to IIAC’s 7% annual growth plus the upcoming 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and that the completion of the work will lead to vast improvements in IIAC’s capacity to handle more passenger and cargo. He finished his comments by saying that the work on the terminal as well as the construction project itself would be on the ‘home stretch’ towards a climactic finish. Begun in November of 2002, the second phase of the construction for IIAC is nearly 60% completed, and is expected to see completion in June of 2008. ------- The only picture I have seen of the concourse under construction is this photo taken of the A380 landing there uploaded by celestar0: ![]()

Third Runway Under Construction - 4,000m
New Incheon Runway May Violate No-Fly Zone
Defense ministry gave warning prior to construction A new runway under construction at the Incheon International Airport is unlikely to ever be fully operational, as it was discovered too late that some planes taking off from it would have to use routes that would penetrate a military no-fly zone, a report showed. According to a report by Rep. Hong Jae-hyung of South Korea’s ruling Uri Party, the third tarmac, completion for which is slated by 2008, would have flights bound for certain destinations cross about 0.8 miles of area named "P518," where the nation’s air force has imposed a ban on civilian aircraft. Some experts estimate a much higher figure, saying that planes will need to enter at least 3.5 miles into the no-fly zone. In August, the Ministry of National Defense told the Ministry of Construction and Transportation, which approved the construction, that it would be difficult to tolerate a compromise of the P518 area. The Incheon International Airport started construction on the strip in 2002, investing a total of 4 trillion won (US$4 billion). With the airport’s current two landing strips, in order to take off or land, planes have to wait until the adjacent landing strip is not being used, as they are spaced very close together. Incheon Airport Privatization Stirs Debate
Critics say move could lead to deteriorating standards October 06, 2010 Joong Ang Daily ![]() The controversy over the government’s decision to sell a controlling stake in Incheon International Airport is heating up after a local current affairs program aired an in-depth report criticizing the privatization plan, leading to an online protest by thousands of Internet users. The government announced last week as part of its budget proposal to sell a 49 percent stake in the airport operator next year. Incheon International Airport Corporation is assessing the share value and sales price with investment bank advisers who will manage the initial public offering. However, an amendment to a related legislation that would authorize the privatization is still pending in the National Assembly after it was introduced last year. A majority of opposition party lawmakers are against the plan. The Ministry of Strategy and Finance and the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs justify the privatization by arguing that the airport must be supervised by an agency with operating expertise and the ability to attract more financial and capital support so Incheon International Airport can develop further as a leading global airport hub. A partial privatization would help boost the airport’s development without the need to increase the financial burden on the government. The government is planning to carry the privatization in two phases, with an initial tranche of 15 percent to be offered by the end of this year and a second tranche of 34 percent next year. Critics say, however, that the partial privatization of Incheon International Airport would mean the loss of its status as a publicly owned facility and could affect the airport’s service quality and brand image. Incheon International Airport, which opened in 2001, has been named the world’s best airport by Airports Council International (ACI) for five consecutive years and has received various other global awards. ACI is a global body whose members include more than 1,700 international airports from 181 countries. The airport has seen a continuous climb in operating profits and sales each year. In the first half of this year, the airport made 268.8 billion won ($237.7 million) in operating profits on 624.8 billion won of sales. “Instead of selling its stake to private owners, the government should try offering its expertise on operational success to other overseas markets,” said an industry official. “It will be a pity to see the world-class airport fall into possible foreign ownership.” According to Realmeter, one of the nation’s leading research agencies, 56 percent of the public that were surveyed are opposed to the privatization plan, while only 15 percent agreed. In addition, more than 400,000 Koreans have signed a letter of protest that was circulated by the airport’s labor union. Critics say several previous airport privatizations have failed to achieve expectations. London’s Heathrow Airport and Sydney Airport in Australia encountered additional problems after they were privatized, while airlines and passengers complained about higher fees. Nevertheless, an Incheon International Airport Corp. official said, “Although the timing of the stake sale may be delayed, it will still go ahead.” |

Pulling up my old thread for information on Phase 3 expansion
Dear Korean Forumers,
just by luck I've come across the competition for Terminal 2, and I've seen all the images of the winning entry available at the architects' (Heerim) website. However, I also read that in the "Stargarden" area of the airport Transportation Center, an exhibition was held that showed most of the design entries. I'm very interested in viewing these, but searches in the English-speaking online world yielded sparse results, unfortunately. I hope that firstly, more images and/or videos of the competition entries exist in the Korean-speaking internet (Daum? Naver?) and that secondly, someone can post them to this thread! Thanks in advance! |
