Workers attack 2 Air France managers as job cuts discussed

http://www.bbc.com/news/business-34445379

Quote:
The measures include cutting 1,700 ground staff, 900 cabin crew, and 300 pilots, and also a 10% reduction in its long-haul business, a reduction in the size of the aircraft fleet and an increase in pilots' working hours.
Security guards helped Mr Broseta flee the protesters by climbing over a fence, but not before his shirt was torn from his back.

The relations between Air France and KLM have turned very sour this last week.

Things have turned ugly after French pilot unions announced another strike, this time because they want to see a better balance between the slow growth of Air France and much faster growing KLM. They want to transfer a large part of the growth that KLM made over the last couple of years to Air France. Including a transfer of long haul routes from Amsterdam to Paris and also have the 787s on order with Boeing go to AF instead to KLM. This because in the merger agreements it was specifically written that both airlines would be balanced in their growth. This was actually put in the agreement because the Dutch shareholders feared that the much large Air France would simply eat up KLM. But now the situation has turned much in favor of KLM, who have restructured their airline much better and not have a single pilot strike in years. AF, who are still struggling to get profitable because of a stalled restructuring efforts and strike after strike don't seem to accept that KLM is doing much better.

In term KLM has completely lost it's confidence in Air France, seeing this new strike, which is also harming KLM, as just more evidence that Air France doesn't want to do their part in the difficult job to the Air France-KLM group back in shape after years of negative results. Because the aim of the strike is now to transfer the growth from Amsterdam to Paris it has also angered Dutch unions, which have always, even up to this week, have been supportive of their French counterparts. But as it's now threatening jobs at KLM it could also turn into a split in the bond between the different unions.

As this marriage seems to be crumbling the calls for a divorce have again become stronger and stronger. But that is something that as it will be very difficult to split the 2 airlines it does look like this whole situation won't be solved anytime soon.

Just to be clear, I'm writing this from a Dutch perspective.

I have never, ever understood why KLM needed to be merged with Air France.

The only argument I ever heard was: "Well, KLM is just too small to survive on its own".

Getting taken over isn't exactly a solution to that problem.

Also, KLM and Air France could have had all the cooperation they currently have within SkyTeam, and through other agreements, without needing KLM to be taken over by Air France.

Once you look into it further, it becomes clear how Air France was able to take over KLM: politicians and shareholders were bribed with cushy jobs, shares, etc.

The short term gain of a few, is what made this disaster possible.

This is not an old picture.

Last year KLM tweeted a photoshop with a half orange 777, this was done for Kingsday.

Now KLM are actually painting one of their 777s in that half orange livery for real. Simply because they got so many positive reactions for the photoshop. I don't think it's specifically linked to any sports event or the Royal family. It's just to do something special that showcases the Dutchness of KLM. Just like they did the Delftwere Blue tiles livery a couple of years ago. The difference will be that this one will be a bit more obvious.

I wonder how the Air France pilots will react to this plane.

I flew with this from Singapore to Jakarta in February 2016... only 3 weeks after that, the route was cancelled... so pity...

It is a pity indeed, as Air France decided to scrap all of the seven weekly (daily) flights to Jakarta with a 777 all the way going down to zero . That is very badly explainable to customers and to CGK of course. And now everyone flies via AMS. What you see in those planes (and to Kuala Lumpur as well), is that French people are now the third- and sometimes even the second-most visible nationality in the airplanes of KLM and Garuda.

AF could also just have scrapped three to four weekly flights to CGK, the same for KUL if actual demand even really was low, rather than the costs are high because of its pilots. But it doesn't matter, they scrapped a lot, KLM added three extra weekly flights to KUL while Garuda split the flights to London and Amsterdam creating room for the French (and to a lesser extent German LH that stopped CGK as well) victims of budget cuts.

actually I don't know the reason of AF's CGK-SIN route cancellation... but maybe it's more efficient for them to codeshare with Garuda (AF, KL, and GA are Skyteam members)...

the main disadvantage of CGK-SIN-CDG is that we need to stop twice if our destination is not CDG, but other cities in Europe (or even North & South America)... not efficient...
