Those were the plans, both for the V300 Zefiro and for the AGV. Now they are in tests only for 350 and, as far as I know, only for the first one, that of TrenItalia.

What is the purpose of this station? Considering it is even further from the city center than the Naples airport, wouldnt it kill the main advantage of high speed train over flying and prove itself to be only a waste of money? Is the ridership of the line from Rome to Salerno so high that they need the additional 10-20minutes that the train takes to stop at Centrale?

This was discussed a couple pages before. Just to summarize: Napoli Afragola will not be a common stop for all trains traveling to or from Napoli Centrale. It will, however, be the stop for plenty of planned "Freacciargento" and "Frecciabianca" services linking points further South with Roma, which will use the high speed link to Napoli/Salerno and then improved/regular lines.

The time savings for these trains will be around 20-25 minutes and it will avoid capacity issues at Napoli Cle.

So very soon there will be 4 reconstructed/brand new high-speed railway stations in Italy following a modern architectural design:
Torino Porta Susa
Mediopadana
Roma Tiburtina
Napoli Afragola

How come they didn't expand the airport one?

A new semi-HSR link between Afragola and Salerno (actually connecting near the town of Sarno with the old one) has been built from Afragola. The new link passes NORTH of the vesuvius, since there is no space SOUTH of the vesuvius, an area which happens to be at the same time extremely dangerous in case of eruption and one of the most urbanized in all Italy. Today's slow line passes south of Vesuvius, all thought HSR trains Rome-Naples-Reggio already use the line north of Vesuvius, but to do so they need to go from Afragola to Naples Centrale, then the train has to depart on the opposite way and go back to the area of Afragola and take the new line. With the opening of Afragola, all that will be cut probably saving more than 20 minutes, possibly even more, between Rome and Calabria.

So now you understand that the only way to use the new line "north of vesuvius" for the connections Rome-Calabria and still stop fairly close to Naples WITHOUT having to turn around the train was Afragola

And i predict it will be a great success: most people in Naples metropolitan area do NOT live in Naples and a lot of them live "north" of Afragola: therefore for them afragola will be actually a lot better than the old stop of Napoli Centrale.
Plus they will be able to fairly easily drive there and park the car, cathing the train to Rome/Florence/Bologna/Milan/Verona/Venezia/Turin. All within 4 hours or just a bit more from the station.

I think it will replicate the success of Mediopadana, but times 10

Well I already answered. Actually Afragola is more "central" in the Naples metro area (go look to Google maps!) than Centrale.

On top of what I already wrote, let me explain that we will have basically 2 kind of services:

Milan-Rome-Afragola-Naples Centrale (same from Verona, Venice, Turin)

AND

Milan (Turin, Verona, Venezia)-Rome-Afragola-Salerno-Reggio Calabria

If they are smart, probably the split will be 2/3 the former and 1/3 the latter. The direct train will be around 20 minutes faster, which in the world of trains is A LOT. Plus Afragola really complements Centrale in my opinion

Questions for the neapolitans in the forum: are they also building exits on the 2 highways that criss cross near Afragola?

Making the access easy by car to the new station will be a critical factor of success

Of course i also hope the station will be well integrated with the public transportation, but that's another matter

Trenitalia is going to flood the high-speed line axis with non-stop Roma-Milano services after the timetable changes with 12 services/day (not including all other Freccia services stopping at other stations like Mediopadana, Firenze etc) taking only 2h55 and more calling only at Bologna Centrale (2h59 travel time). The schedule will be so that departing Roma on a later direct train will arrive in Milano earlier than the "all stop" high-speed train (taking 3h20 or 3h30).
