DISCUSS: Best Central Asian Skyline (major cities only) e

Central Asia can have many meanings but for the sake of this discussion lets limit it to: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Omsk in Russia, and Xinjiang of China.

I know some may include Afghaistan, Mongolia, and parts of Russia and Iran.

Criteria: Has to be a major city with a decent skyline (up for interpretation), population over 1 million (this knocks out Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgzstan which has small cities)

Here's the list:
Astana, Almaty, Tashkent, Urumqi, Omsk

Astana

Almaty

Tashkent

I'm just wondering if Astana meets all those criterias (population)? I would love to vote for Astana if there is place for that kind of exception.

I would say it's a toss-up between Astana and Urumqi. Both have impressive, developing skylines.

seems like its coming down to Astana vs Urumqi.
I'm a bit surprised Almaty isn't regarded that highly.. it has lots of skyscrapers for its population size AND lots of natural beauty to go along with the urban beauty.. all those trees and the mountains providing a great backdrop. It reminds me of Chilean cities.

Astana doesn't have much of a back drop but much of the buildings are new and the city has an advantage over the others in that its being built nearly from the ground up (Akmola, the city that existed before Astana was rather small and didn't have much)

Sorry, had to move this thread out of the Hall of Fame forum because Jan usually is the one to decide which new topic would be discussed.

Here's how the Hall of Fame forum works...

Basically, it is a forum of urban tournaments that at a certain time of the year ( I believe Jan is the one to decide when ), a chosen thread topic ( I believe Jan is also the one to responsible) will enter the contest for members to vote and pick the winner. So before we go to the poll, we have the chance to discuss and comment on your own and other people's choices.

Nobody should open any new thread until a certain thread has been nominated and a winner is announced although people are welcome to submit their ideas for any potential new threads.
