BHS to close in the new year with the loss of 160 jobs. This will leave a big hole in Queen St which is showing signs of struggling now that the retail heart seems to have shifted to the Hayes and St Davids 2.

Queen St was Wales' premier shopping street with some eye watering rents but lately the only new retailers have been Poundland, pop up shops, convenience stores such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, Little Waitrose and value retailers like Officers Club, Books etc.

Still some big retailers like M& S, Next, Boots, Primark, River Island etc but there are also a lot of units occupied by retailers who either have stores elsewhere in the city centre (Schuh, Fat Face, Accesorize, River Island, Santander, Clarks etc) or that have hit the buffers lately (Thorntons, HMV, Thomas Cook).

An uncertain future awaits I think. I'd like to see Queen St become more mixed in its offer - some bars, restaurants etc - rather than solely retail and fast food which is what it's become in recent years.

Will that give Primark more floorspace? The current store gets horribly cramped. They need to set a minimum width between shelf units. The menswear basement is also rather claustrophobic. Compare with the spacious and airy Bristol store (former John Lewis building).

Obviously already known about, but this is the first official announcement of the amount of space they are taking and the opening date too.

Fashion giant Primark confirms first store in St David's

14 February 2013

Value fashion powerhouse Primark is joining the line up at St David's, Cardiff, the shopping centre jointly owned by Capital Shopping Centres (CSC) and Land Securities, with a new store which will enhance the strong fashion offer within the centre and prove a powerful new footfall driver.

Primark will take an 86,000 square foot store, increasing its existing presence in the Welsh capital by more than 80% in terms of floor space, and is planning to be open by summer 2014.

The announcement of the Primark deal signals a strong start to 2013 for Wales' leading shopping and leisure centre which has proved itself the destination of choice for retailers wanting to join the Welsh market. The centre has seen a number of new openings in recent months including the first stores in Wales for Hamleys, A|X Exchange, Cosy Club and Crepe Affaire.

Speaking on behalf of the St David's Partnership which runs the centre, Joanne Skilton, Retail and Leasing Director for CSC, said: "We are delighted to announce that Primark's flagship store for Cardiff will be at St David's. This letting complements the incredibly strong fashion and clothing offer within the centre which our 39 million annual shoppers really love. It comes on the back of a fantastic year of deals for the centre reinforcing how important St David's is for retailers wanting flagship stores in key retail locations like Cardiff."

A Primark spokeswoman said: "We are delighted to be relocating Primark to St David's in the summer of 2014. We know there has been a huge demand for a bigger Primark store in Cardiff so it is exciting to finally turn this into a reality."

St David's is advised by Cushman & Wakefield and Jones Lang LaSalle.

Poundworld To Draw Shoppers To The Capitol

24/04/2013

The Capitol shopping centre in Cardiff, which is owned by Moorfield Real Estate and managed by Plus Shops Retail, has signed Poundworld to take a new store within the centre.

The single price retailer has signed a 10-year lease and will pay a turnover based rent. Poundworld is taking a unit formerly occupied by fashion retailer Internacionale and is due to open next month.

It follows a number of recent openings for the centre, which have included the second Cardiff store for Pret a Manger and stores for Tesco Metro and easyGym.

Leigh Burnett of Plus Shops Retail, said: “The signing of Poundworld is an important addition to the tenant mix at Capitol, allowing us to create a real point of difference in Cardiff and bringing a strong name, with an equally strong footfall, to The Capitol.”

Chris Edwards Junior, trading director at Poundworld, said; “We’re really delighted to be opening our store in Cardiff, creating 30 new jobs for the city.”

Moorfield Real Estate was represented by Kitchen LaFrenais Morgan and Macarthur Wilson. Poundworld was represented by Francis & Company.

Mount Fuji joins St David's

23/04/13

St David’s is to see the arrival of an exciting new catering concept to the UK which is based on Japan’s famous bullet train.

The new concept comes from Tokyo based restaurant operator Mount Fuji and will be the company’s second restaurant in the UK, but the first to have the bullet train design. Its name comes from the green tea farms the company owns below Mount Fuji.

Mount Fuji will open a 1,188 sq ft unit at St David’s in the Eastside catering quarter opposite YO! Sushi in May. The layout will incorporate a train themed seating area and the background of Tokyo at one end and Mount Fuji and its tea fields at the other. The new restaurant will serve Bento (boxed and portioned boxes that Japan is famous for) and contemporary styled meals, alongside a full range of Japanese beers, sakes and green teas.

This latest letting demonstrates the innovative ways that St David’s is working with retailers to satisfy the demand within St David’s Eastside catering quarter. This letting follows a spate of deals in recent months that include the opening of Cosy Club and Crepe Affaire, as well as a new trading concept for Toby’s Carvery – the Toby Carvery Express.

Speaking on behalf of the St David’s Partnership which runs the centre, Joanne Skilton, retail and leasing director for intu, said: “The arrival of Mount Fuji at St David’s marks another first for the centre and a further strengthening of our already vibrant catering offer. The importance of catering has changed hugely in shopping centres over the years and it’s important that as a market leading operator, we deliver the same mix of fresh and new trends in catering that we strive to do in retail.”

Andrew Yamaguchi-Cooke, owner of Mount Fuji, said: “When you hear or read about Japan there are three things that always come up: Mount Fuji, the bullet train and Tokyo. We wanted a strong location for our second store and the debut of this new concept. Attracting as it does more than 39 million customers a year, St David’s was an obvious choice.”

St David’s is advised by Cushman & Wakefield and Jones Lang LaSalle. Mount Fuji was advised by Towler Shaw Roberts.
