AKERSHUS CASTLE, OSLO; NORWAY

Here are some more pics of Akershus Castle, a Castle build in the middle Ages as the viking Age had dwindeled. As the old medieval Oslo (lying on the other side of the bay) burned, the "new oslo" (for centuries called "Christiania") was build directly in the shadow of the Castle.

True but we did have the English civil war which did away with many wealthy families and their ancestral castle homes, here's one example which by all accounts was a wealthy family home

That is Marienburg outside of Hanover City.

It was build by the Hanoverian Kings of the United Kingdom, Close to their ancestoral Home City.

Unfortunately, however, it was in use as residence for only few years,
because Hannover state succumbed to Prussia in the process of unifying Germany.

Now something different. Burg Rabenstein in the same named district of Chemnitz, Saxony. The smallest still existing medieval Burg (Castle) in Saxony.

BURG FALKENSTEIN; HARZ; GERMANY

It is relatively seldom in Germany that one actually can find Major size "hidden treasures" after the Motto "deep in a forest".
Most intact Castles are either closer to towns, in open landscapes or turned Tourist attractions with integral parking and Dining.
This Castle, however, lies deep in the Harz forest, several kilometers from the nearest parking lot (which also lies "off-pist").
You could actually stumble over it by Chance while hiking.

My own pics.

Europe´s probably most photographed castle gets an antry every second page here, but I found these two photos rather rare and deserving a post.

This one shows the Neuschwanstein from a different angle than those mostly portrayed from natural, elevated viewing points in its surroundings.
The elevated perspective from the north-west requires some kind of aviation and is thus not so often seen.

This picture must have been taken from the main tower by the gate.
