Surfers Paradise Foreshore Redevelopment

Couldn't spot a thread for this, so thought I'd make one.

Gold Coast City Council is spending $25m to upgrade the Surfers Paradise Foreshore from Clifford St to View Ave.

A fairly detailed Master Plan can be found HERE (4.7mb).

The Iluka thread mentions that when (if) it goes ahead, water tanks are to be installed underground on the foreshore to capture all run-off from the Iluka development to use on the foreshore landscaping.

Construction is due to begin early 2010 and finish within 18months. This will make The Esplanade extremely busy out the front of Soul!

More information can be found here:

yeah i thought about making a thread for this, cool development...

a lot of the retail shops in Cavill Ave were complaining because the redevelopment doesnt touch cavill ave and that cavill ave is getting left behind..

i have to agree, cavill ave is looking a little tired these days, considering its the focal point of surfers it definetly needs a upgrade

Will be nice to see Surfers slowly returning to its former glory over the coming couple of years. The big developments, the light rail and the foreshore work will be a nice kickstart. It sure needs it.

Well spotted, even though it should have been obvious to me.

what do they mean by "EXISTING SURFERS PARADISE SIGNAGE
RETAINED FOR SHORT TERM"? they do not plan to knock it down?
also not a fan of those modernist looking outlook thingys... apart from that i really hope it turns out better than it looks in pictures

Part of the new Foreshore opened today. These pictures (although fake and not of the new opened area) were posted on GoldCoast.com.au

$8m worth of Surfers upgrade unveiled

Quote:
MARK Blayden was one of thousands of tourists enjoying the $8 million first stage of the Surfers Paradise foreshore development this morning.

''We have been walking past it for the past three days waiting for it to be open, so we were pleased to get the chance to use it,'' said the Sydneysider.

''It is a lot better than what was here the last time I was in Surfers.''

Economic Development and Tourism Committee chair Councillor Susie Douglas unveiled the project, saying the work had come in on time and on budget.

''The completed first stage, from Elkhorn Avenue to the northern boundary of the Soul development, is a major milestone for the project,'' she said.

The new section includes toilet blocks and beach showers, lockout points, a 4.5 metre-wide oceanway and pedestrian promenade, plus barbecues, picnic areas and new turfed sections.

Montmartre Cafe proprietor Richard Bonello welcomed the completion of stage one works, commenting that the foreshore was 'better than he expected'.

''The beach out the front of the cafe has to be one of the best in the world and it is great to get our new and improved view back,'' he said.

Stage two of the foreshore development, between Hanlan and Laycock streets, will be finished early next year.

Why does it not mention the redevelopment of the (most significant) area between Hanlan and Soul? Or is Grocon responsible for this section of the foreshore?

grocon is paying for the redevelopment of the foreshore in front of soul, but i'm pretty sure the same company is carrying out the works all the way along.

It was a condition of the DA that they had to do it, so if its Juniper or Grocon it doesnt matter. At the end of the day Juniper would have paid for it.

I know originally Grocon were responsibile for doing it, but they may have sublet it to Abigroup to do. Grocon actually tendered the foreshore but didnt get it, probably would have been better if they just continued the whole way through.

Goldings Civil were subcontracted to do the works in front of Soul by Grocon.

Abigroup are the managing contractor for the remainder of the foreshore works which has been sublet to Scape Shapes (same landscape contractor that is doing the Oracle)
