Btw, how is the patronage after CMRL announced the festival discount? Can regular travellers share some updates? I am waiting for CMRL to release the figures soon - it will at least validate/disprove the high-fare theory...

It was 30000/day sometime back as per dinamalar. No news after that. Cmrl should release these figures in their website monthly.

Any idea when will they start operations on Little mount - DMS stretch? I heard they did a trial run in July. Can we expect it to be operational in 2 or 3 months?

85% of the elevated stretch barricade work is completed. Around 60% pile cap work started till Wimco Nagar.Likely Wimco nagar Metro station will come close to Wimco Nagar railway station. Also Wimco Nagar elevated depot land also fully acquired and barricaded.

So phase1 ext going at good speed. I will not be surprised if CMRL open this section before the deadline of 2019.

TBM S711 Makes a Breakthrough at Chennai Metro’s Korukkupet Stn

TBM S711 – a Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine operated by Afcons Infrastructure today made a successful breakthrough at Chennai Metro’s Korukkupet Station in north Chennai – 5 months ahead of its scheduled target of February 2018.

After building tunnels for Chennai’s UAA-01 project, this TBM was commissioned on April 25 2017 from the Washermenpet Station to build the 1818.6m down-line tunnel of the 2.4 km UAA-08 project between Washermenpet and Korukkupet on the 32.10 km Line-1 between Chennai Airport and Wimco Nagar. The earth pressure balance machine built a total of 1299 rings in just 5 months aided by north Chennai’s favorable soil profile which comprises of silty sand, fine sand and clay. Along the way, it made a ‘hidden’ breakthrough at Sir Theagaraya College Station in June as the station’s excavation was still underway.

The 1st TBM on this section, a Robbins EPB machine, was commissioned in March 2017 to build its parallel up-line tunnel and has another 330 rings (approx 462m) left to reach Korrukupet Station.

Part of Anna Salai to become two-way by next week

Motorists heading towards Nandanam through the arterial Anna Salai will get a breather, as a portion of the road near DMS will open for traffic after it was cordoned off for metro rail construction for close to five years. Work on the 3.3km underground line from AG-DMS to Saidapet is in the final stages. The line is expected to open in the first quarter of 2018.

Barricades have been removed and workers are laying a fresh layer of bitumen on a patch of lane leading to Nandanam close to the office of principal accountant general. "The road will open for traffic by next week," an official said.

Opening of the portion of the road will ease traffic flow, as motorists heading from Cathedral Road and Anna Flyover towards DMS through a narrow road will have more space as they head past the AG-DMS entry point.

Changes had already been made on various parts of Anna Salai, including DMS and Nandanam junction, as the underground work along the route is nearing completion. CMRL workers are giving finishing touches to the entry/exit points of the stations - AG-DMS, Teynampet, Nandanam and Saidapet - that lie along the 3.3km line.

Two key stretches to open by year-end

Another route will be operationalised by mid-2018

By the end of this year, the most important stretch of Chennai Metro linking Nehru Park and Chennai Central, and another stretch from Saidapet to AG-DMS are likely to be thrown open for the public.
According to officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), trial runs have started on the stretch between Saidapet to AG-DMS and the track work is nearing completion between Nehru Park and Chennai Central. “Other works, such as electrification and signalling, are also in progress on both these stretches,” an official said. Chennai Central Metro Rail station, the largest underground station in the city, will connect two stretches — on the upper level, trains from Nehru Park will arrive and the lower will see trains coming in from Washermanpet. While the Nehru Park-Chennai Central stretch will become operational by the year-end, the Washermanpet-Chennai Central will be open only by mid-2018. The last stretch to be completed, from Government Estate to AG-DMS, will be opened for operations by December next year, he added. “The tunnelling may be over in another two months and after that, there is quite a lot of ancillary work,” he said.

How will they open Central - Washermanpet without DMS-Central getting ready? Does Central have pocket track to link the blue and green lines?

I hope they build 3-5m wide protected pedestrian pathways.
Wishing for a protected cycle lane is probably too far fetched.
And bus stops that are next to where the bus actually stops and not hidden behind some parked cars.

Beach station awaits makeover as Metro plans MRTS takeover

The Chennai Beach railway station may transform into a major railway hub as the Chennai Metro Rail is all set to take over the Mass Rapid Transit System (that runs between the Beach and Velachery) by next December.Top railway officials said the Metro Rail would take over a portion of the land and premises of the Beach station from Southern Railway and convert it into a railway terminus. Besides, the Beach and other MRTS stations may also get improved amenities to match the Metro Rail stations. On the other hand, the fares on the MRTS stretch could be increased once it is taken over by the Metro Rail.

Beach, one of the oldest stations in the city, also hosts a station for the suburban rail network that runs between Beach and Tambaram.Top railway and State government officials told Express that the premises would be bifurcated between Metro Rail and the Southern Railway (which will continue to retain control over the suburban rail network).Sources also told Express that the initial plan was to develop the Fort suburban station as the terminus for MRTS services. However, that idea was dropped as Fort did not have adequate land to develop the required infrastructure. But the Beach station, which came into existence in 1931, has the land required for development as a commercial and operational terminus for MRTS.

The idea was discussed during a high-level meeting of the State government with Chennai Metro Rail and Southern Railway officials. In the meeting, which was held to discuss the inception report submitted by consultants — PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Balaji Railroad Systems Limited (BARSYL), leading railway and Metro Rail consulting engineers deliberated on finer aspects of the bifurcation of the Chennai Beach Station.

It was understood that a plan for the transitional period before the merger is
likely to be submitted by January next year. “Resources such as rolling stock, signal as well as employees will be retained for some period,” railway sources said. It was also learnt that the fare structure of MRTS is likely to undergo a change and the State is looking at a common ticketing with Metro Rail.

It was also proposed to explore the possibility of having additional parking space at the vacant land available close to Rajaji Salai near Parry’s Corner junction. Railway officials said they had agreed to lease out their land to the CMRL for parking needs, although the design and capacity are yet to be ascertained. The inception report focussed on clearly demarcating the physical assets, such as tracks, platform and yard boundary.

Anna Salai-Airport Metro line in December

People living along Anna Salai and outsiders alighting at Chennai Central should be able to travel to take a Metro to the city airport by the end of the year.

Chennai: CMRL (Chennai Metro Rail Limited) might launch Metro trains from Central and AG-DMS to Airport by the end of December, if everything goes according to their plan, say officials. Metro rail has planned to invite the CMRS (Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety) to inspect the 3.7 km DMS – Saidapet and Nehru Park – Central sections in a month.

CMRL officials said the two sections that offer direct airport connectivity from Central and DMS to the Airport would be ready by December 2017. In July last, CMRL had run an overhead electrification (OHE) wagon from Little Mount to DMS. As soon as signal and communication works, which were being done since then, get over, CMRL would hold trial runs using the four-car Metro trains, which would culminate with the visit of the safety commissioner.

If the section gets commissioned, as it has been planned, volume of underground network in operation would increase to 15 km with Koyambedu – Nehru Park stretch already being used.

The 3.7 km Saidapet – DMS section would have become operational much earlier if only the Russian firm had not abandoned the work citing cost escalation.

CMRL had subsequently floated fresh tenders and awarded the remaining tunnel and stations works to separate contractors on the stretch which comprises four stations, Saidapet, Nandanam, Teynampet and AG-DMS. Though CMRL had initially proposed to open Saidapet-DMS section when the entire corridor leading all the way up to Washermanpet via Chennai Central and High Court becomes ready for commercial launch, Metro has revised its plans and now proposed to open traffic up to DMS from Airport, which would cover Anna Salai, one of the most-busiest roads in the city.
