City to get Science Park at Kamatibaug

VADODARA: While the Science City at Ahmedabad may be something many might envy, Vadodara too will have a smaller version of it to cater to children and citizens of the city. Planned on the lines of the facility at Ahmedabad, the science park will come up at Kamatibaug in place of present zoo that is to be shifted to Ajwa in the near future.

The proposed science park coming up in place of the zoo will have several interesting displays and live experiments for children and adults. The Sayajibaug Garden, better known as Kamatibaug, already has a planetarium, a museum, a health museum and an aquarium on its premises besides the existing zoo and the garden there.

"The set up is ideal for a science park to come up there. While the city does not have an appetite for a full-fledged science city like that in Ahmedabad, it can definitely have a smaller set up with interesting displays for kids," said an official. The official added that the proposal for the park had already been made in the present budget.

The present zoo is located in about 45 acres. Officials said the land was enough for a science park. "We have announced the plan of establishing a park in the budget and made an allocation of Rs 50 lakh. However, we will not undertake the entire expense now. The park will come up in two phases with the first phase kicking off in a month's time," said mayor Balkrishna Shukla.

The first phase will come up on the existing premises on Kamatibaug. The second phase will be taken up after the zoo is shifted to Ajwa. All this will be available for other recreational projects once the zoo is shifted. Expertise of local persons who have worked on projects at Science City in Ahmedabad will also be used. "The blueprint will be finalised soon," Shukla said.

Banyan trees to be covered under Biodiversity Act

VADODARA: The city that derived its name from banyan tree might be able to regain its lost glory if the state government has its way. Considering the depleting number of banyan trees in the city, the state forest department has decided to incorporate the trees under the Biodiversity Act.

The banyan trees will be considered as indigenous trees in the city and will be given special treatment. "Till now, people were able to raze banyan trees without any kind of permission. But now they will have to take special permission before cutting them," said SK Nanda, principal secretary, forest and environment.

"We will be including such indigenous trees under the act in other districts of the state too," Nanda added.

The district forest department will initially focus on the areas that don't have enough green cover and then move on to other areas. "We are aiming to plant over 1.08 crore trees in the entire district. Tree plantation programmes will be first taken in areas like Kalali and ring-roads in Waghodia area where the number of trees are very less, Nanda said.
Nice to see efforts in both Surat and Vadodara to have a green conscience during development

VMC gives nod to Night Life in Vadodara

Barodians will finally get a place now to enjoy nightlife after a long day of work. After a long wait, the proposal for Raatri bazaar in Vadodara has been finalised by the standing committee of Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC). The night market which will have food stalls, eating joints and other entertainment zones will come up near VIP road and is expected to start by Navratri.

The VMC will complete the work by Navratri and citizens of Vadodara will now get to enjoy at a place will be officially be open even after midnight. The demand for the Raatri Bazaar was initially put forward by current MLA of Raopura constituency a decade ago. The bazaar which is proposed at the VIP road being at the centre of the city will be convenient for everyone.

"The decision to start the Raatri bazaar comes as a respite to all. There is no place in the city where one can go and enjoy late in the night. Vadodara lacks night life, and this will also help people doing night shifts," said Jignesh Shah, a citizen. The location is also in proximity to express highways connecting to Ahmedabad and Surat.

In a conversation with DNA, mayor and MP Balu Shukla said, "We plan to start the Raatri Bazaar by this Navratri. The rough plan of the complex has already been prepared the design in mind. It will be aesthetically designed and also have a modern touch to it. The place which will offer various eating options will be open till late. The time has not been finalised yet."

The complex will have ample parking space too and will organised in a proper way by guards to avoid traffic jams. Security guards will be deployed at the centre to avoid any untoward incident, added Shukla.

From this map:

We can see quite clearly that HighStreet Vadodara is being developed on the site that is labelled as "Ambica Mills"

Interestingly, on the overview map for HighStreet, there is mention of a "Windward Plaza" being located on the site of Gokak Mills.

This seems to be a Mall/Multiplex development by Shapoorji Pallonji, but Im unable to find any official information regarding it so far.

Rs 38-cr project mooted to draw waters from Narmada

VADODARA: To meet the water requirement in western part of the city, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation has mooted a Rs 38-crore project
to draw
water from Narmada canal, sources in the civic body said. The project, which is awaiting a go-ahead from the state government, will entail the construction of an intake well at a private land near Sherki village on the outskirts of the city.

According to civic body officials, following an approval from the government, VMC will invoke the urgency clause no. 17 of Land Acquisition Act ( whereby government gets special powers in case of urgency and directs the collector to take possession of any land needed for public purpose) and take possession of 9,500 square metre of land near Sherki.

Explaining the project, the official went on, "An intake well at the cost of Rs 3 crore will be built on this private land. The water drawn from the canal will be pumped to the intake well, which will be constructed in its vicinity. The pumping station will also be built next to the land." The water will be transported to a water treatment plant (which will also be newly constructed) and the treated water will be distributed to the western parts via pipelines.

"The plan is to draw 1.5 crore gallon (75 million cubic litre per day) of water from the Narmada canal," the official said, adding that the tendering process for the project has already begun from the month of June. Once the plan is put into action, authorities of Narmada canal will be handed over a design for the base.

At present, the water distributed to the western parts are drawn from seven water tanks including
Sama, Gorva and Harinagar areas. The water at these tanks is collected from wells of Poicha and Rayka-Dokda. To this, the addition of the water of Narmada will fulfil the requirement. The rest of the city is supplied water from Ajwa and river Mahi.

Walkover bridge

Express News Service Tags : vadodara, development, walkover bridge Posted: Thursday , Jul 23, 2009 at 0135 hrs Vadodara:

The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has decided to construct a walkover bridge by floating tenders, rather than initiating the project through a consortium of interested companies.

Sources said the tender in the same connection will be floated in a couple of days. Once constructed, the walkover bridge is expected to ease problems of pedestrians, as it would connect the railway station to Kadak Bazaar without obstructing traffic.

Giving details of the project, Municipal Commissioner M K Das said: “Demolition in the station area is over and some minor legal works would also be completed soon. As per the initial plan, we have decided to allow the interested parties to form a consortium. But due to the economic slowdown, the companies realised that they might not get good returns from the advertisement placed on the walkover bridge. As a result, the tenure of Built-Operate-Transfer (BOT) process was quite long, which we thought was not a better option.”

Civic officials said those who showed interest in the project were in different businesses. “One of the contractors would construct the bridge and another would look after the hoardings, which would fetch them revenue through advertisements. Although both got together and formed the consortium and showed interest in the project, the tenure clause was not feasible for us, therefore, we rejected their demand,” said another senior official requesting anonymity.

Das added, “We realised that the economic slowdown would not last long. The rates quoted by the interested parties were quite low, and at the same time, the tenure was long. That is why we have decided that instead of going for BOT system, we would take up the project on our own, which would cost us approximately Rs 4 crore. But at the same time, VMC would continue to earn the revenue generated from the hoardings and advertisements as the walkover bridge would be in a prime location in the city.”
