What is the true center of Chicago?

Don't know if this has been done before. Chicago of course, is known for the Loop. However, I think there are several places that somehow qualify as the city's actual vortex or hub point. In otherwords, where in the city, when you are standing there (or floating) do you feel you are at the exact heart of it all?

If I didn't list your choice please list what you think it is...

i think it is the old jean point baptise du globill trading post site along the chicago river. Globill was Chicago's first resident. this is where internet service was first offered to native Americans along with access to Skyscraper city polls in exchange for kachina dolls, plastic tom toms, and various Wisconsin Dells made-in-China arrowheads, Indian maidens with blinking eyes, wigwam shaped ball point pens, and $100 in free chips for Pottwatomi Casino in Milwaukee.

Oh, yes, and furs.

I would say City Hall, where Da boss operates. It wasn't an option, though

Should have included City Hall. Back in 87, when Washington died, some friends and I went to see his body lying in state at City Hall. Had to wait for 2 hours at 3 AM to file past his casket. Certainly felt like the center of the city at that moment.

Should probably have included Millenium Park as well, a place where I'm guessing future generations of Chicagoans may see as another candidate for being the ultimate vortex of the city.

I voted for the Michigan Avenue bridge, I think it's the feng shui of the main north south avenue crossing the river. Something feels right about it.

^ daley plaza is right across the street from city hall, so i think that option covers both of those bases.

i've edited the poll to reflect that.

The Michigan Avenue bridge over the Chicago River, or right before it. That is quite literally the center of Chicago. There's this open feel to it, one that I immediately took a liking to when I was there last year. I felt like I was in the middle of it all, caught in the vitality of one of our nation's greatest cities.

Honestly, I am kinda surprised how State % Madison is leading so easily. I know it's where the street system is numbered from, but when I am at that intersection, nothing I feel seems particularly different than State & Monroe, or any busy loop intersection.

Must have a lot of numerology types here and less feng shui people.

I'd go for Union Station, at least from a worker or a commuter perspective . So many people enter the city from there, it is steps away from some of the largest blocks of office space in the city, yet is nearby the non-office parts of the city. It is the city's Amtrak hub and is ~4 blocks from a station serving every CTA line.

There's a reason why Sears picked the location it did for its headquarters. From Chicagoland as a whole, Union is far more important than State/Madison.

Though, Mich Ave. Bridge is another good candidate.

When I used to do the Metra thing back in the early 90's Union Station was still very much on the edge of the central city. In the last 15 years, that's changed quite a bit as the Loop has sprawled to the west.

The Michigan Avenue Bridge over the River for me. When I'm at State/Madison, still feels too far away from the North side to be center. The river also seems like the perfect North/South dividing point and the Mich. Ave. bridge is close to the central point between Wolf Point and navy Pier.

That's why I included 3 river options. Maybe instead of the mouth of the river I should have said where Lake Shore Drive goes over the river. In terms of driving vortexes, there's nothing quite like heading over the river coming from north LSD and seeing the river to your right and the Loop rising ahead.

If the Spire does indeed get built, that might be a contender.

Daley Plaza, because its like the center point from union and sears, millenium park, state street and magnificent mile.

By that logic, you may think that state and madison is an equally valid choice.

but not so in my opinion, it feels "unchicago" with carson's departure.
