Plan for the New Jersey Meadowlands, 1960

Check out the rendering:

"Almost in the shadow of New York City, some 15,000 acres of so-called "Jersey meadows" lie virtually barren. For centuries the area has defied any serious inroads by civilization because it is actually a tidal marsh. Plans are now afoot for reclaiming this enormously valuable land. First, dams and dikes must be built, to be followed by a combined industrial and residential park capable of supporting millions of people. No such master plan can take shape without the extra strength and corrosion resistance of stainless and alloy steels ..."

LOL...

Talk about an ecological nightmare...don't want to sound like a nimby, but that's one development that I'm happy didn't go past the drawing board.

Some office parks, they're building a huge new shopping mall, some industrial parks, and still a lot of meadowlands left over.

The Meadowlands are hideous. ANYTHING going in their place would look better. They serve as a sort of psychological barrier(to me, anyways) that you're really out of reach of New York without a car if you're behind them.

The Meadowlands is not a place known for it's beauty...in the summer, when on the turnpike, it literally stinks when you open your window. Too much industry close by.

But the views of NYC are nice when on the bridges.

Just to give people an idea, I'll post a couple of pics I took last year when I lived in the Meadowlands.

The only things really there are office parks with huge parking lots.
