From The Architect:

Announcing the construction of a new building in the heart of Manhattan takes on a special meaning, and it is not with defiance that we launch this project. The truth is, we love this city, we love the values it represents, and the values architecture represents.

Each architecture tells a story, and the story this new building for the New York Times proposes is one of lightness and transparency, not defiance. Towers, as we know, are often symbols of arrogance and power, but this will not be our case. While building a tower fulfills the greatest challenge in the upward reach, it also contributes a presence on the skyline that is both vibrant and changing with the winds.

This is the idea: The building’s basic shape is simple and primary, similar to the Manhattan grid. It is slender, and does not use mirrored or tinted glass which render towers mysterious and hermetic subjects.

On the contrary, the use of clear glass combined with a pattern of ceramic will allow the building to adapt to the colors of the atmosphere. Blueish after a shower, shimmering red after a sunset.

The building speaks to the street. When people circulate between its floors, they will take stairs that are located on the facades and their flow will be visible from the exterior. This is, after all, only appropriate, as it is from the street itself that the newspaper metaphorically gathers its inspiration.

There is another notable feature to the building: At street level, the building is open, transparent and permeable. A generous internal garden will be accessible to all at ground level and will be visible from the street, thereby creating multiple transparencies throughout the block from 40th to 41st Streets.

The building will also include a public auditorium as well as restaurants and shops at ground level in its desire to participate in the everyday life of the street. In a humanist vision of towns this is called a sense of urbanity.

The philosophy behind the roof garden is the opposite of that on the ground floor. While the ground level of the building engages the street and its daily rites, the roof garden is a place of silence and contemplation.

The meeting rooms at this level will allow for the enjoyment of New York City views through a screen of glass and ceramic that will shelter the garden from the winds.

But we must not forget that a newspaper is a factory for news, and, at The New York Times, the newsroom is the real machine plant for the entire system. It occupies floors 2 through 7 and overlooks the surrounding streets like a large magic lantern, continually lit and constantly active.

On all other floors, work conditions have guided our design: transparency, flexibility, ease of movement
from floor to floor, while privileging the sense of community and guaranteeing the necessary privacy.

While New York invented the loft concept, we want to rediscover it and restore its dignity.

I would like to thank all those who have so far participated in the project for their help and collaboration, and I wish all joining us a most extraordinary adventure both in spirit and practice.

Around 2.5 days! I was tweaking the different ways and the current layout seems best and more user friendly.

Although I might split the construction capsule into a post following the first one.

Thanks for the feedback all.
