Tearing down the Buffalo Skyway- alternatives?

Apparently, some people are arguing that the Skyway should be teared down to open up waterfront development. The big question is what should we do with it?

I think it needs to be buried underground along with the railroad that runs along the highway.

How dare you call yourself "Buffalo" Jim when you live in Cheektowaga!

OK, in all seriousness, I agree, it should be channeled, but is there enough money do such a thing? Until then I advocate just making it an attraction -- lighting it up and all that other fun stuff.

I dunno, I think it is simple to blame the Skyway...yet urban planners have screwed up so much in Buffalo in the last 40 years...why should we take their advice on this issue?

I dunno...Rt. 5 might not be as busy as the days when Bethlehem Steel was running, but there is no other Hamburg/Lackawanna route without going thru South Buffalo...pretty much out of the way. The Skyway IMO should be left alone, the problems will be fixed when the city and county figured out what caused them.

A tunnel...NO, too expensive (refer to Boston)
A Parkway...Possible but would slow traffic and then a bridge that could rise high enough to make way for Lakers (yes, still used back there) would have to be built.

There are options yes, as in any situation...but realistically...fix the problem, don't make a mess pushing blame on an elevated roadway.

If Brian Higgins can get Federal money to do it...yes please God get rid of it. However, if he's unsuccessful at getting Federal funds, then bayviews gets his wish, the skyway stays up forever.

^ well...functionally we absolutely need a new Peace Bridge...the skyway needs to go on a visual and physical barrier to our waterfront basis...so its a tough decision but I choose new signature Peace Bridge.

Let's repeat together...

I-190. Niagara Thruway. I-190. Niagara Thruway. I-190.... Carry on without me.

Correct me if I'm wrong:

I see this as a game of "Let's reconnect the downtown core to the waterfront". (If this is not the case, then I'm wrong, full of *it, and you don't need to read any further.) Even if, hypothetically speaking, you removed the Skyway, you'd release a radial sliver of land, still have assinine access control on NY 5 (Fuhrmann El) (remember, the Skyway proper doesn't begin/end until the Coast Guard exit - the map is wrong), and, best of all, downtown would still be cut off from the waterfront!

(Here is why I'm an engineer and not an artist: )

The red is I-190 and the land it "obstructs".
The blue is the Skyway and the land it "obstructs".
The green is the "Fuhrmann El" and the land it "obstructs".

And I'm being generous, I could argue that the land adjacent to the Skyway near the Coast Guard Station is wasted just as much by horrible access configuration typical of NY 5 north of Ridge Rd as it is by the Skyway. Especially when you consider the bridge proposed on Main St which would effectively connect this land whilst leaving the Skyway in-place.

But, if you perfer driving through a confusing maze of broken-up streets, or walking across dank gravel (or horribly paved, I can't tell) parking lots which smell and probably wouldn't even "feel safe" in a rich neighborhood, then by all means, be my guest.

I rest my case.

yes at some point we absolutely need the I-190 to become Buffalo's version of PCH (Pacific Coast Hwy)...we can call our hypothetical new boulevard - BCH (Buffalo Creek Hwy), LEH (Lake Erie Hwy), NFH (Niagara Frontier Hwy), etc...

As for right now lets just keep the ball rolling on getting the skyway down and the new peace bridge...then focus our collective effort on the I-190 and metro rail expansion. Tho personally I'd like to see metro rail expansion above any of those.

Just think - If we could "divest" the Thruway Authority of I-190 (if not "divesting" ourselves of the Thruway Authority first), then we wouldn't have to hear all this crap about revenue neutrality, and maybe then they could trash the GI tolls and move the Lackawanna barrier out to Eden to match the new "Newstead" toll!

Travelling south to north, I think you could (for now) leave in place up to Hamburg St, tie it into and widen Exchange St, resurrect Terrace St, and "Perry Boulevard" up to about Porter Ave. At a minimum, and then work on the Niagara Riverfront up to Riverside next.

okay, I look at it like this...Rt. 5 has to go someplace...its still a major artery and needs to flow in a general direction it always has...

Perhaps removing the Skyway, and turning the Rt. 5 traffic inland thru an area (mostly empty) across the Buffalo creek and into the first ward...right into the 190...give it a simple onramp and even an offramp again for the Casino (Indians would be happy) the new Rt. 5 would turn inland away from the lake right after the Tifft reserve and could also connect roads to the 1st ward, South Buffalo and the waterfront, all without really slowing traffic because there would be no need for any bridges at that point...perhaps a slight incline over the creek.

This would free up all the land for the waterfront, plus it would allow traffic to flow well (because not everyone stops in Buffalo) and would also perhaps make for a better South Buffalo/Lackawanna/Hamburg connector...just make it less confusing than Fuhrman

anyone?

Katherine Street...1st ward, you'll get my idea...perhaps not the exact location, but an idea

just combine 190 and Rt.5 for a short time while it passes the cobblestone and HSBC, the the Rt 5 offramp into downtown...allow the Route to continue on along Main Street

That's similar to where the Southtowns Connector is supposed to go, however I don't think that it's going to improve the flow into downtown. More like Lakeview to Cheektowaga traffic.
