based locally? not anymore; they're based out of canary wharf, london.

Sounds like a drug they give to ol' Grampa in the nursing home; you know, to help the digestive tract along...

I think that was Simon Pure.

BTW, the official commercial of the Buffalo Non-Development Thread. (Love the YouTube comments - "these guys don't have WNY accents")

Oh, and a very cool Elmwood montage.

I liked the one somebody posted way back, I think it was DT. The one where they're losing and the weather is all gloomy, etc., and they take the lead and everything becomes bright and sunny.

That used to be me, now you're lucky if you actually catch me listening to a game, much less watching one. I wouldn't mind it as much maybe, if they aired a football game instead of a three hour long block of commercials with the occastional football break.

The comments are especially right on the "Let's Go Buff-a-lo" chant, though. That was awful.

Those actors all have the California-influenced yuppie accents found in just about every big cosmopolitan city.

Speaking of local English again, I wonder how far east of Buffalo the "banquet hall"/"party house" dividing line is.

BTW, here in Cleveland, they're called "party centers". Almost all of them are owned by Italians.

I never had heard of those "banquet halls" until I moved up here. Everyone down South just used nice hotels (we actually have them) and convention centers.

Wow, people are stupid. And we call ourselves the greatest country on the planet?

Canadian anthem confusion and other stories
By News Staff Reporters
Updated: 03/17/07 8:38 AM

When 14,000 out-of-town fans, media and college staff come to Buffalo for the NCAA Tournament, interesting things can happen — starting with the national anthem.

College basketball fans are no strangers to the time-honored tradition of the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the game.

But the musical selections that kick off games in HSBC Arena are causing confusion.

While Western New Yorkers, especially hockey fans, are used to hearing “O, Canada,” followed by the national anthem, some in the out-of-town crowd have been clueless this week.

One couple, decked out in Old Dominion University sweat shirts, stood politely with their hands over their hearts as the Canadian anthem began before Thursday’s games. Then they weren’t sure what to do.

“Maybe this is the Buffalo song,” the man suggested to his companion as he lowered his hand back down to his side and looked around uncomfortably.

Another (hopefully) visiting fan, who recognized the tune, had a theory about why it was being played.

“It’s the Canada song,” he informed his buddies. “They have to play it because part of Buffalo is in Canada.”

...
Yeah, move over Topohto, you're actually part of us.

Which begs an interesting idea: A rhetorical question - if Buffalo actually were a bi-national city, which side would you think would be doing better right now?

Same thing everywhere else I lived. Then again, those cities didn't have large Italian populations. In Buffalo, banquet halls have widespread popularity among the area as a whole -- consider how oldsters swoon over places like Hearthstone Manor and Protocol -- but they're still very much rooted in Italian-American culture.

Around here, in Cleveland, there's a lot of "party centers" in suburbs that have very large Italian-American populations; the W-towns are chock full of them. There's also quite a few smaller ones near me, that serve mostly a Russian clientele.

Well, since we don't have nice hotels or nice convention centers, what else would you suggest? Seems it's making do with what we have!
