Leeds Landmark could be a Times Square style

Here is my choice for a Landmark proposal for Leeds. I believe the UK has not achieved this successfully yet. I'm talking about New York's Times Square

A version of this for Leeds planning in the future skyscraper's and futuristic buildings would be awesome. My thoughts would be to have it on the Leeds Majestyk/Nightclub building. Extended upwards!!

Can you imagine the view hitting people as they entered the city. Both from the beginning of the City Loop and Train Station. Also the Queen's hotel and Park Plaza opposite. Thought's and Comments.

I'm all for it, but the usual suspects would consider it tacky and an affront to the historic buildings of City Square.

It wouldn't need to be the whole of City Square. Wrapping it around the building would be a huge crowd puller. Probably regular features on national TV and a busy city square all the time.

What is the history on the Majestyk building?? If anything it would enhance the history and let people find out what the building's are about.

I agree yes, it would be a fantastic landmark and add the vibrancy of City Square. Potential to be better than Piccadilly Circus. I think though it could only be executed on the site where City Square House will be, Majestyk, Flares and the buildings around New Station Street.

Piccadilly Circus is a really feeble attempt in this country IMO. It just isn't done right. Look at the far eastern cities. They know how to do it. It needs to be high and work in with the surroundings. That's why Times Square has been so popular.

Sorry Mr T but im one of those usual suspects. Whilst I guess it would have been ok to have advertising on the old Norwich Union and NatWest buildings at the top end of city square that have long since been demolished (similar to the old Bullring perhaps which had a lot of ads in the 80s) im a bit critical as my bad effort below shows it doesn't really look much cop to have overt advertising on buildings around city square and it makes me think too much Far Eastern or Eastern European city in style.

What about somewhere not so attractive perhaps the junction of Woodhouse Lane and Merrion Street where they could have advertising on K2 (not a bad building but as its modern they could have a degree of advertising on the podium at the bottom of the building where the Ventura offices are) and along part of the Merrion Street and Woodhouse Lane/Albion Street facades of the Merrion Centre and St Johns Centre. Perhaps somewhere like that would be a more suitable location and encourage investment to that end of town perhaps?

I think I would agree with that; Merrion Junction is one contender; another would be Eastgate Roundabout, or Corn Exchange I think. Not the building itself; but that square thing. I wouldnt really call it a square; but it could be if it had investment.

I also agree with that idea. The K2 building could have advertising all the way up on the side we see facing out towards the road. That would give a big effect!

I like K2 as it is =/ Id prefer to stick it onto an uglier building; St. Johns Centre? Or Westgate House (is that what its called). The one at the end of the Headrow before you go over the IRR. Or Yorkshire Post building- thats quite a good location for it. And a good advertising spot too.

Please, no vulgar multi-national capitalist pornography for Leeds.

I did however hear a rumour that No.1 City Square was originally intended to be 30-storeys tall. Stick that in your bagel and eat it.

Won't have any embassies, but suspect there will be a few consulates in Leeds.

All the embassies are in London. Leeds has a few consulates, Dutch, Finnish etc.

Furnival Gate in Sheffield is the closest Yorkshire will get to a Times Square-style development. If at all.

eeey, well one of the old grumps here has to say I really don't think much to a derivative neon solution to finding Leeds a landmark. Can you imagine the planning meeting to decide whether to fit garish neon signage to the Old Post Office and Queens Hotel. Along the lines of 'you want to do what!?!!'.

Worth the suggestion though.

The Corn Exchange, Victoria Quarter, Temple Mills, Tower Works, Town Hall and Civic Hall are our existing landmarks. Criterion Place, Lumiere and BWP are going to be the shiny soaring future. I don't think some sort of observation tower is too outlandish in 10-15 years time if the city continues to grow and regenerate south of the river.

If you look at the city at night you will see there is a lot of colour going on lately. Starting with the drive in from the south. Bewley's hotel and the buildings along are all lit brightly with colour floodlights. White/purple, then bridgewater place is looking huge and lower levels well lit. Under the railway bridge multi-colour lighting, around the loop and Radisson Hotel is multi colours all rotating at night (looks amazing) and more recently the West Yorkshire playhouse is lit up full green and can be seen from 5 miles away!!

Then walking around the city you have neon advertising boards on the square at WHSSmith and also the gatecrasher board on New Briggate. They look great and bring the city some nice features.

I really think we would be instantly recognised worldwide if we could pull off a big display. That's what most tourists outsiders want to see. Something different. Not your typical wheel or observation tower. Old news in cities these day's.

If it was done, then I would recommend in a totally new part of the city away from the cultural classics like City Sq, Corn Ex where we able to appreciate the quality old buildings.
