I'm never quite sure if something has already been mentioned or even if it is in the right section!, but a takeaway place has opened up on the ticket machine level in the Monument Metro, where the newsagents used to be, with two coffee machines, slush, milk shakes, hot dogs and I'm not sure what else, some kind of hot foods

A Northumberland food group has expanded its portfolio with the opening of an Italian eatery, creating new jobs in the process.

The Old Boat House Food Group, which runs a series of successful Northumberland restaurants including Blyth Boathouse and The Old Boat House Amble, have opened La Famiglia in the former Pride of Northumbria premises on Queen Street .

La Famiglia, which is set to offer authentic Italian dishes with a Northumberland twist, follows the recent success of The Old Boat House Amble being named as Coastal Fish Restaurant of the Year in the 2017 Fishing News Awards. It has also been nominated as Seafood Restaurant of the Year by The Caterer, which has spurred the group to diversify their portfolio with La Famiglia..

Owner Martin Charlton said: “The Old Boat House Food Group is founded on excellent quality and La Famiglia will be no exception. Our guests can expect a warm welcome, great food and a really memorable dining experience.”

The family run group, which formed in 2014, hopes that by creating new jobs they can further demonstrate their commitment to creating opportunities for young people in Northumberland.

The French Quarter: Were we impressed by Newcastle's newest wine bar and bistro?

The French Quarter on Westgate Road

Newly opened in the railway arches on Westgate Road, The French Quarter promises to offer ‘informal dining’ with tapas-style small dishes, and a wide selection of wines.

Inside, it looks stylish and clean, the wines themselves taking pride of place in the decoration and a few quirky touches - a rather sweet, distinctly French-looking bicycle - stopping it from being bare or clinical. t’s easy to imagine settling in at the bar, or any of the small tables, for a long night sipping good wine - but did it live up to expectations?

So how was the food?
We started with a planche of charcuterie and cheeses. Beautifully presented, it would make a perfect side plate if you just wanted a small bite with your drinks, as well as a good starter. A few items stood out: soft goats cheese started off mild, but packed an earthy punch after a few bites, thin strips of cured ham and bright little gherkins joined a really excellent, pungent sausage. I couldn’t resist a baked Camembert: we joyfully spooning up the warm, gooey cheese with fresh, crisp croutons couldn’t fail to be enjoyable.

Mussels, in a marinière sauce, were as good as I’ve had, creamy with a powerful kick of garlic, but not over-salty, as the dish can sometimes become. With these, we ate dauphinoise potato. The simple dish - little more than creme fraiche and potatoes - was elevated to a thing of pure beauty, perfect in its texture and rich, comforting flavour. Subric - a sort of potato croquette with generous chunks of cured ham - were piping hot, crisp outside and fluffy within.

The best choice of the evening was perhaps the confit duck, a whole leg offered a huge portion of tender meat which fell of the bone, and tasted wonderful drizzle in the dark, unctuous orange sauce. It’s often difficult to decide how much to order at a place where small dishes like this are offered. I’d say these plates aren’t huge - but you could probably easily fill up with just two each. We ended on tarte tatin, which was sweet and gentle, the puff pastry soft and not too crumbly.

The menu is not radically dissimilar from the Colmans mothership on Ocean Road. Fried fish and chips is at the heart of things and seemed to be dominating the orders leaving the kitchen. However, there’s a good deal else besides, and along with a friend visiting from the North West, where the fish and chips are mostly rubbish – her words, not mine (she’s a Scouser) – we set about it.

Mrs Diner, apparently feeling the need for a little regression therapy, ordered scampi and chips. The langoustine tails were just under-fried, resulting in a slight clagginess to the batter closest to them. However, the accompanying chips were superb. Colmans doesn’t go down the beef dripping route, which is controversial, but the lack of flavour in the frying medium – they use a neutral vegetable oil – does mean you can really taste the spud. They looked a little pale on first glance but there were crispy bits to enjoy. There’s just something tremendously satisfying about them, and they’re not so greasy as to leave you feeling like you need a hot shower immediately afterwards. A fine example of the fryer’s art. As was the haddock that our friend chose and which, I’m happy to say, was bang on form. A golden-crisp covering gave way to steaming white flesh that was moist, yielding and ozoney-fresh. In a word – perfect.

I pushed the boat out and tried their lobster, the harvesting of which had required an actual boat to be pushed out, from just down the coast in Sunderland. The beast could have done with more draining after cooking – piercing the claws released a fair gush of water which rendered the garlic butter it sat in pointless – but the clawmeat in particular was sensational. Summer is the time to eat lobster and at £25 for a whole one, including chips and salad, Colmans’ is a reasonably priced luxury.

Service was full of warmth and charm and was pretty clued up, aside from one moment of comedy when I asked where the lobster had come from. The waiter pointed out of the window and said: “The sea”. I deserved that.

My one major gripe is that for a place called a seafood temple, there are some glaring omissions on the menu. Where are the turbot, plaice or sole? Why no crab or cockles? What became of the gurnard or the mullet? Most damningly, given how plentiful it is in the summer, why no mackerel? Perhaps the menu will move away from the more obvious species in due course. Perhaps it won’t. Either way, with good fish being served in front of a wraparound panorama of the depths whence it came, I’m sure this temple will pack in new converts and true believers alike.

Camber Coffee in Start Fitness

Paid a visit today.
Upstairs where the bikes are sold. Very nice spacious high ceilinged room with multi views over Grainger Street.
Cycling pictures on the walls.
Good friendly staff. They sell light bites and sandwiches. Nice ambience. They offer a loyalty card so will visit again.
